before & after: jayne’s chair + lara’s kitchen

without realizing it, i’ve been slowly developing a fondness for two-tone upholstery. when i was finishing up some edits on the book manuscript this weekend i noticed that a lot of the homes and projects i chose include couches and chairs that have different fabric used on the arms and back than the body of the chair. it’s not something i’m normally drawn to, but i think i can start to feel my interests changing or growing a bit as we speak. so when i saw this pretty chair makeover from jayne in lincoln, nebraska i was hooked. jayne used a mix of anna maria horner fabrics on a few recent chair makeovers and this piece was my favorite. i rarely think to upholster things using different fabrics, but this definitely makes me open my mind to multiple styles in one piece. great work, jayne!

photographer lara ferroni is a favorite of mine and kristina‘s. i love her home as much as i love her delicious cooking and photography. so when kristina sent me a link to lara’s recent seattle photo studio makeover i was excited to see what she’d done. in addition to taming the space’s fire engine-red walls, lara added beautiful beadboard to the walls, painted the cabinets, and added a new fridge to stock with food and supplies for her shoots. i’d be just as happy to eat here as i would be to shoot photos. well done, lara!

The two different fabrics that Jayne used on the chair looks fantastic. My favorite about this post is the floors in Lara’s kitchen!!!! They are FABULOUS and now her new kitchen really bring out the period and character of those great floors.

The color palette used in the kitchen is simply beautiful, it really opens up that entire space! I would thoroughly enjoy cooking and spending a lot of time in it. Jayne’s chair is great! Love everything about it!

Oh, that kitchen is absolutely gorgeous. Totally magazine quality, love it! Jealous.
I love that chair and shape, but am I crazy if I say I would have painted it before reupholstering?

Erin @ Cultivating Home

I love the fabric choices for the chair and that Jayne left the chair its original color. Great upholstery job! And the revamped kitchen looks so much more inviting, too!

Lara

Thank you all so much!

I wanted to note here that the very talented and lovely Clare Barboza (http://clarebarboza.com/), my partner in studio, and her husband Joe did a ton of the work in the kitchen to make it look so fantastic!

Seriously, what an amazing eye for fabrics for the chair. Walking through a fabric store I would have never thought to put those two together.
*sigh* I’ve got to do something my my grandmothers ‘french provencial’ sitting chair that I have. The material is only just starting to show it’s wear (it was covered plastic for many years).
This is awesome inspiration.

I really love the kitchen! I’ve been looking for some creative, beautiful, and affordable backsplash options for my own kitchen. I’m not particularly convinced that tile is the look I want. How well does the beadboard hold up behind the sink? Did you treat it? Also, could you tell us what you used between your upper cabinets and counters in the area behind the stove?

Thanks!!

Jessica

I love the beadboard as well. But that cabinet colour is gorgeous. What colour is it exactly? I need to paint my cabinets and think this would work perfectly. Thanks so much!

kelly

oh, that chair. such a beautiful pattern pairing, I agree about mixed upholstery –I can’t get enough of it lately!

kristina

@bextoronto – I went through similar questions when redoing two kitchens, and contemplating a third redo. In the end, I realized that I don’t do so much splashing around behind the sink that I was concerned. Whereas behind the stove needs to be easily cleaned, but then again, there any option was fine– glass, tile, stainless steel… I went for a fancy hand cut mosaic in one instance with stain resistant grout, and in the second instance subway tiles. In the third, I had no wall covering, just paint!

I never had any hardships!

Thank you for all the wonderful comments on my chair :)

Julia, an easy way to start pairing fabric designs is to choose fabrics from the same line. Both of the fabrics I used for this chair are from the Drawing Room line by Anna Maria Horner. Designers tend to use a similar colour palette through the fabrics in the line making it easier to combine them in one project. many people have the wonderful knack of being able to combine fabrics from many different designers – but this is a good place to start :)

Jayne Bramley

Lara – I love the colour scheme in your kitchen, I find it very relaxing and tranquil and I am a huge fan of the beadboard!!

Lara

Bextoronto – We didn’t do any special treatment above the sink, but it does have two coats of paint on it. Since the counter has a short backsplash, I’m not expecting a problem.

Above the stove is just the wall, which we painted with a semi-gloss paint. No special treatment, at least not yet. At somepoint, we are going to switch out the stove, so maybe then.

Jessica – I’ll have to look up the name of the color for you… it’s one of the Martha Stewart collection colors at Home Depot though.

Thanks everyone for your lovely words!

(Jayne – love your chair!)

I like the chair by Jayne more each time I look at it. Leaving the wood natural and dark and coupling it with the bright tropical fabric give it (IMHO) a real Earnest Hemmingway Havana style. I myself would have done it more in bright and dark greens to further that style.

Ava

BEAUTIFUL! I would love to see a step by step on how to reupholstering a piece of furniture like that!

Shelly

I’m curious if the fabric is upholstery weight or not. Nice job! Did you upholster it yourself?

Jayne Bramley

Hi Shelley,
The fabric is not upholstery weight – it is a home dec. weight, so it will probably wear more quickly than if I had used upholstery weight but I figure by then I will be ready for a different fabric design anyway!!

Yes I upholstered this myself, I took a class at my local community college to learn the technique and now I am hooked!!

I have to say, the thought of painting the wood never crossed my mind. The wood is in such good condition and good quality, and I like the natural look :)

Melanie

I love the kitchen palette and the super simple island with wooden top. Is that a ready-made and if so, where did you get it?

Debbie

Can anyone tell me how much of each fabric you’d need for a 2-tone chair like this. I have an old Ethan Allen chair I’d like to do in 2 fabrics, but want to purchase them myself. The reupholsterers here (Netherlands) have the most boring choices imaginable. Thx.

Lara

Melanie – the kitchen island is from IKEA. It’s the Stenstorp style… it runs about $380.

Jessica – The cabinet paint is SlipStream (MSL272) by Martha Stewart Living at HomeDepot. It is an eggshell finish.

bernie

hmmm. I like the after chair with the before kitchen…..

mrswoo

That kitchen has also benefitted from an expensive new set of taps and a smart sink.
