The Red Shoes is a relatively new favorite of mine. I saw it for the first time two years ago at the urging of my nearest and dearest, Ginny Branch Stelling. Ginny knows what’s up when it comes to beautiful old movies so when she speaks, I listen. The Red Shoes is a 1948 British film following the rise of a young ballerina and her struggle to come to terms with her dueling passions. The dancing is phenomenal. If you’re a ballet nerd like me, you’ll be spellbound. If you’re not, get your priorities straight already.
gold bullion fringe $1.99/yd, searchlight lamp $795, paper lanterns $2.76 per set of 2, gold braided tassel $1.99, vintage 1950s tulle dress $325, hundred spires earrings $13.99, hundred spires earrings $14, triple bow flats $43, “ultimate red” lipstick $19.50, ticket roll $3, blue bracelet $23.

The Red Shoes is a stunner on every level. The colors are breathtaking, the costumes unreal, the dancing sublime- even the ending is satisfyingly twisted for such a girlish little flick.
Attention New Yorkers! The Red Shoes is playing at our beloved Film Forum through Thursday evening. I will be the one twirling in the aisles, popcorn flying every which way. -amy m.

NICE! This is one of my most favorites films!! Well done!
spell check! *favorite* ha!
ha i just did a post about this too! where did you find the film stills?
Wonderful film choice; wonderful table lamp; wonderful quotable takeaway (“If you’re not, get your priorities straight already”).
Thank you, thank you for this post! This movie was such a HUGE part of my childhood, and I recently watched it for nostalgic reasons, and realized how genius it is! I love this post – it really brightened up my day!
Lovely film!! I love the concept!
I love the colors. just wanted to add- this film is availble to watch instantly on Netflix. I’m watching it right now…
Gorgeous – I love this movie!
I love these “living in” posts. every time I watch a movie (which is often, now that I’ve gotten rid of all but the very basic cable), I look for inspiration for home decor or crafts… heavily into a French mode now, hence my etsy store… anyways, love it — keep it going!
Okay. Do you know what is on Moira’s leg during that movie? Is that a birthmark? It’s in 2 scenes, on rehearsal scene where she asks the boss if he still believes in her after a choppy practice and the argument with the composer…and the next being when she’s at the bar the morning after her big success.
It looks like a drip the entire length of her leg?
That vanity case’s price is too good to be true! When things are really sold in pounds, can you convert it to us dollars or mark that it is in pounds? It would be so helpful! Thanks!
This is also Martin Scorcese’s favorite film, and his foundation undertook the laborious and expensive job of restoring the film, which was rotting from mold. It is making its way around the country now, restored to its former glory. My husband and I saw it for the first time here in Seattle and were blown away! And neither of us are particularly ballet fans. It is stunningly beautiful on so many levels.
i just love red shoes in general! i had a pair of dorothy sparkly ruby red slippers that i wore on my wedding day, but alas they were lost amongst all the fun from that day…i wish i lived in NY so i could see this production!
Sarah-
I always convert British pounds to US dollars….. The case is £35 which translates to $54.
Yay! I think I’ll have to go this evening.
This movie has been such a major design influence over me for almost 20 years. I saw it in my early twenties and it had everything that my young, gay heart could absorb. Beautiful color, clothes, dramatic set design and a tragic love story all rolled into one. I wanted to be Boris Lermontov. I think about it often and recommend it to everyone. Thanks for sharing it with us.
loved (and was totally frightened by) this movie as a kid. i think a viewing is in order!
is it possible that this movie is nightmare inducing? i think i watched it as a kid – and may be scarred?? can she never take the red shoes off or something???
Thanks for posting this! I didn’t even realize this was playing… just about to buy my tickets for the Thursday show :)
This post just made my rainy day! I love this movie so much! I still dream of having red pointe shoes.
so much fun!! The dress is to die for- the bow shoes fab! Alas, Vanouver is too far away to make it on time for the show…have fun and enjoy your popcorn!

This is why I read your blog! I can’t wait to check out this movie. As a little girl I danced for over 15 years so to say I’m a ballet nerd is putting in lightly! Those red pointe shoes make me smile and brings back lots of great memories! I love your design boards today! Just beautiful!
I adore this film and had something close to an obsession with it during university. I have recommended it to a couple of girl friends who found it too dark so it’s great to see how many others out there appreciate its beauty as well.
You have inspired me to rent this!
I love that dress, so pretty!
Such a fantastic movie! I love old movies so much and it’s definitely one of my faves.
Most of the things are out of my price range, but quite beautiful to look at!
oh yay!!!! i do love this movie- and still cringe over my oh-so-cheesy design project based off of this and the 12 dancing princesses aptly named, “danced to pieces”.
this is a lovely tribute to such a gooooood film.
This is such an amazing movie! Its on our list of films to watch here at the studio and we love this period for the ornate furniture. So rich!!
I feel like Amy and I are movie soulmates! My mother showed me this film when I was 4, and I actually used pictures of it when I was making my inspiration color board for my wedding. LOVE the translation to “Living In.” The little blue bows are amazing.
I love this so much! I had actually never been to a ballet or been interested in ballet when I watched The Red Shoes a few years ago. I just knew it was one of those classics that every film lover has to see and I fell in love! Now I’m ballet season ticket holder & try to spread The Red Shoes love to everyone. This “Living In” is definitely one of my favorites—I need those shoes!
I must see this film. Like now.
I watched this movie a million times when I was in college. It’s a cinematic masterpiece. Thanks for reminding me of it!
I loved this movie when I was a little girl. I would check it out over and over from the public library. Last year I checked it out again and fell in love all over again. I think I need to buy it…
I saw this movie as a kid. It gave me nightmares for years.
this played here in minneapolis at the end of december— so happy it’s on the big screen. the colors are so lush it’s a dream to take in, thanks for highlighting this “archer” gem!
I did a post on movies and decor and linked your posts for the Godfather on my blog and hope its OK. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your series… I just watched North by Northwest… oh I’d love it if you could do that one! Keep em coming!
LOVE the dress!!!!!
one on my fav movie really i love it so much. i’m kind of addicted to it cause every time when i feel boring i start watching this movie.
This is one of my all times favorites movies, You see I wanted to be a ballerina but was born with the natural talent and body so I became a designer which I love anyway. This movie post are so nice, it must take a while to put together, but all appreciate them

I just wanted to say that this ‘living in’ section is probably my favorite part of design*sponge! followed by sneak peaks and before and afters :)
you do such a great job and i’ve loved all your movies so far!
That white & red dress is drop dead gorgeous.
I am always amazed at the quality of these “Living In” posts. Amy, you do a fantastic job!
You should do a “Living In” for the movie “Mame”…the Rosalind Russell version, not the Lucille Ball version. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
I love the searchlight lamp!
I have to agree with the other posters–the “Living In…” posts are the best. Just so inspired.
I love the way the shots here look like they are from a Renoir painting. I have never seen the movie but I have a real-life aspiring ballerina at home so I will rent it for the two of us to watch together. Thank you so much for the idea!
I adore the red and white vintage dress! Red and white are so perfect for a wedding :)
This is one of my mother’s (a former ballerina) favourite movies and I can’t believe I’ve never seen the whole darn thing! I must see if I can netflix it! Thanks for sharing and I’m passing this on to Mum now as well. :) Happy Day!
Fantastic! So glad you did “living in” this movie! My favorite film and was just waiting for you to do it!
I’ve never even heard of this movie but it sounds really interesting!
