bev hisey butterfly bag chairs

i was so bummed to miss IDS this year, but it’s been great to hear from designers at the show about their new work. i’m always happy to see an email from bev hisey in my inbox and i was even happier to hear about her gorgeous new butterfly bag chairs. made of 3mm wool felt, they were shown in the arren williams space at IDS and are currently on my list of things i would rather be sitting on than my rickety living room sofa (yes, ac, i’m admitting it’s not comfortable). i’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for anything bean-bag like so these felt versions seem like the perfect way to integrate my favorite tv-watching seat into my (slightly) grown-up home. thanks to bev for passing them along- you can see more of her work right here.

Rickety sofa? Didn’t you end up getting one from Room & Board upholstered in a Hable Construction fabric? I am sorry to hear it’s not holding up well.

And… Really brilliant beanbag-type thing. I’d love to see a version that’s a little more structured as a realistic seating alternative to those Moroccan pours.

our living room has 2 little vintage danish settees. the hable sofa is in another room because it doesn’t fit very well (size wise) in the small living room.

Aren’t they brilliant? They actually seat two people cozily (lots of people cuddled up on them during the IDS) and are filled with foam cushion off-cuts which makes them a bit firmer and more structured than a regular bean bag chair.

The seats are great for girls and young women (college age), but what is up with the setting of the photo shoot? Outside in the snow in front of some industrial equipment? What kind of statement is this making? It doesn’t make sense.

raw felt is often an industrial by-product, so there could be a reference to that in there, but it may have just been a setting the designer found interesting. i personally enjoy seeing furniture out of its typical setting, it makes me pay more attention to it sometimes.

also, i’ve seen “beanbag” chairs in adult homes more times than i can count these days- especially those with leather covers. depending on their actual style, they’ve definitely left the ‘kids only’ category over the past few years.

there are several beanbag chairs on the market that have this shape right now…i think designers are definitely moving in the elongated triangle direction, and away from the round “blob” shape we used to know.
