today’s first before & after comes from katie stephenson at art wall online. katie did a mini remodel of her kitchen by taking down a wall, creating a new bar between the two rooms and creating a sweet little dining nook that adds warmth to the space and brings more light into the kitchen. i love a good corner nook so this project was right up my alley. thanks to katie for sharing!
[have a before & after you'd like to share on d*s? just shoot me an email right here with your images (low res, please).]

The after wall color is perfect to take full advantage of all that natural light. Looks like a great place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee!
I would definitely want to be invited over for brunch if I were her friend! It’s so inviting, good job Katie!
I love this before and after. What a transformation! Seeing this is helping me realize the potential of “boring spaces” in my home!

Beautiful! I love the variety of colors and patterns on the cushions! And it’s refreshing to see a GREEN chalk board!
where’s the picture of the kitchen??
that’s the corner nook I want!! Would it be completely obnoxious for you to share the plans for the corner bench?? (I promise that I won’t tell your carpenter that you shared it.) :)
That is probably the best use of a glass dining table I’ve seen–it doesn’t block light from the windows or fill the space (brilliant!)
wowzers, that is one hell of a make over! Sooo pretty.
The brightness is intoxicating! I also like the bright wall color, to play off the open windows and inpouring natural light. What better way to take advantage of a relaxing spot, then to add a nook with seating, and pillows… can I come over? :o)
how did you make or where did you find the banquet seating under the windows? I want to do the exact same thing but can’t find this style of seating anywhere!
I have been searching forever for a LARGE (preferably vintage) chalkboard…where did you find yours? Does anyone know where to find one? Thanks!!!
Julia-I’m happy to share the plans with you. I designed the bench and my carpenter built it for around $500. You can even learn from my mistake, it is about 1″ too high. The paint is “Tusk” from my favorite paint co: C2. Emma N.-the bulk of this project had to do with the wall coming down and the bench going up, but we did paint the cabinets and switch out the hardware, you can see it in my flickr here: http://tiny.cc/HPo0Y . Adrienne–the chalk board I spotted advertising a garage sale on a busy street here in Madison. I hopped out of the car, literally ran over to the homeowner and took it home squealing with joy after paying only $10 for it. I have a local shop owner who will scout out certain pieces for me, do you have someone like that? Mine is currently looking for some lab chairs for the bar. Thanks for all the kind words and you’re ALL welcome over for brunch or coffee anytime. :)
gorgeous! I just love the idea of a bench in the kitchen! I makes it a cozy place you want to linger, sip tea and read the paper!
ahh! Much, Much better and very refreshing. I love all the different textile used throughout the bench!
Breakfast nooks are the best! I think I’d sit there all day long.
I don’t know where you are located, but I’ve bought furniture from this guy in SF and he has some amazing lab furniture:

Hi! I love this room, esp. the paint color. Is “Tusk” the paint on the walls or the bench or both? It looks like it really brightens up the room. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, Katie, this is so lovely!
Leah, the wall paint is tusk. Not sure of the name of the bench paint, it’s the “trim” paint that came with the house. Christine, that shop is amazing, I wish I lived closer to S.F. so I could peruse.
anything with a chalkboard and I am instantly smitten!
beautiful!
I, too, have been dreaming of a nook in my kitchen. A friend has offered to help but the project has stalled. WOuld you share the plans with me, too? SO lovely. Thank you.
I love it! Can you tell me your source for those pillows?
I was so excited to see this makeover was from Katie. I love her blog. My dream house will definitely have a dining nook in the kitchen. Katie’s looks so cozy, and I love the selection of pillows and the cane chairs.
Oh, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get your plans for the banquette!! My DH and I literally just finished building a new wall in our dining room to build a corner nook. We just hadn’t seen one we liked that much until NOW!! Thanks for sharing, and congrats on a fabulous makeover!
Here’s a diagram and more info on the bench : http://tiny.cc/AkKUU Jen the pillows are from all over, is there a particular one or 2 you were wondering about?
Those chairs are pitch perfect, and the colors on the banquet go beautifully with the walls and provide just the right amount of hue. I want those chairs!
Patrick- I got the bentwood cane chairs at a thrift 4/$15 each, can you believe it?
Wow what a gorgeous kitchen!! It is just perfect <3
OOOH WOWSERS. perfect.
