After living in Boston, Albuquerque, Chicago and Indianapolis, I am now in Monroe. Or Funroe as it is often called. We live in the Garden District in a 90 year old bungalow just down the street form the Biedenharn. I love the house and the neighborhood. Thanks to the art and architecture departmenat at University of Louisiana at Monroe and at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, I 've met some fantastic artists since I've been here. Monroe's downtown is gradually getting back on its feet and we have an artscrawl every other month. I would also recommend Woodstock Furniture Revival and Material Things in Monroe for furniture and accessories. Also, if you need a vinyl fix, hit the Pop Shop.

When I was in high school I worked at the Warehouse No.1 Restaurant. We use to sneak hushpuppies and catfish bites into the hostess stand. The food is amazing but the atmosphere is what sets it apart. It is in an old converted warehouse overlooking the Ouachita river. The address is 1 Olive Street which makes me think it was probably one of the first structures or properties to be given an address in that vicinity of the river. Go there and eat the hushpuppies and the bread pudding. It is definately a treat.

Material Things is a very unique shop. If you are in search of a special look or in search of out of the ordinary this is where to look ...and if they don't have it on-hand Joyce and Peggy will search to find what will please you.

What a lovely website and blog…so thankful my coworker introduced me to Design-Sponge!! I am especially happy to see such a neat piece about my hometown of Monroe. You depicted the quaint town well and Maria it was a great place to grow up wasn’t it, ironically we lived just a few houses apart from each other.
