i’m a big fan of diy cakestands, so i was excited to see d*s reader renee’s before & after submission. renee is getting married in july (congratulations!) and is focusing on making as many things by hand as possible. guests will be taking home cookies as favors, so renee decided to use a mix of plates from the goodwill to create her own cookie/cake stands for less than $50. the plates were painted to tie all of the disparate dishware together (there will be doilies between the food and the stands to make sure everything is food-safe) and then voila- brand new custom cookie stands! you can see more images of her handiwork right here, thanks for sharing, renee!

wow! that water in the first photo. gross!! this transformation is wonderful. i love the bathtub and open shelving.
I love the cake stand idea! Does anyone know of any way to paint plates that is food safe, or better yet dishwasher safe as well? Am I dreaming here?
wow.
I love Etageres!
Oh man, that before bathroom picture is pretty stressful! A job well done, I’d say.
I love the cake stands. What did Renee use for the bases, and how did she get the plates and bases to adhere? I’m thinking of borrowing this idea for my upcoming birthday party.
Nice job!!
i love the cake stand idea. I think its a great way to spice up the space above my cabinets that are too high to put anything I would actually use! I will be inheriting a whole lot of stuff from my family, and I would love to find a use for some of it that is dated.
That cake stand idea was amazing!
How did she get them to adhere?
adore the cake stands! such a wonderful idea.
{p.s.} fingers crossed for the mri results tomorrow xo
Thanks everyone! I used E600 glue to adhere them. I also have a quick tutorial here: http://weddingsandcookies.blogspot.com/2009/10/cookie-stands-20.html
There is a DIY post about making the cakestands (I remember when it was on d*s) – just follow the link in the post, or click the DIY tab on the sidebar. I think that E6000 glue works to adhere them. I think this is brilliant. If we didn’t already have a bunch of vintage stands from family members, I would be using this for my cake table at our wedding in April.
What an amazing job on the bathroom.
The cake stands are pretty and so easy!
This has to be the most amazing transformation I have seen yet! I would have just walked away from that before bathroom…
The cake stands are such a great idea! I am totally doing this for my upcoming wedding in April! Thanks for sharing.
Love the cake stands — so cute! I’m going to make some of these as display stands for my boutique.
Varathane and shellac are both supposed to be food-safe finishes. Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully so it cures fully. Dishwasher safe is tough to get without doing a fired ceramic glaze.
Brilliant idea with the cake stands – love it!
love it ladies!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the bathroom! It is gorgeous and light and airy and has a real charming old-time feel!
Love the idea to recycle plates to create a unique, green product!! so cute…and the bathroom is divine. Great job…
What a beautiful small space. The etagere is such a fantastic and appropriate looking storage system in this space.
