i’m a big fan of diy cakestands, so i was excited to see d*s reader renee’s before & after submission. renee is getting married in july (congratulations!) and is focusing on making as many things by hand as possible. guests will be taking home cookies as favors, so renee decided to use a mix of plates from the goodwill to create her own cookie/cake stands for less than $50. the plates were painted to tie all of the disparate dishware together (there will be doilies between the food and the stands to make sure everything is food-safe) and then voila- brand new custom cookie stands! you can see more images of her handiwork right here, thanks for sharing, renee!

I love the cake stand idea! Does anyone know of any way to paint plates that is food safe, or better yet dishwasher safe as well? Am I dreaming here?

i love the cake stand idea. I think its a great way to spice up the space above my cabinets that are too high to put anything I would actually use! I will be inheriting a whole lot of stuff from my family, and I would love to find a use for some of it that is dated.

There is a DIY post about making the cakestands (I remember when it was on d*s) – just follow the link in the post, or click the DIY tab on the sidebar. I think that E6000 glue works to adhere them. I think this is brilliant. If we didn’t already have a bunch of vintage stands from family members, I would be using this for my cake table at our wedding in April.

Love the cake stands — so cute! I’m going to make some of these as display stands for my boutique.
Varathane and shellac are both supposed to be food-safe finishes. Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully so it cures fully. Dishwasher safe is tough to get without doing a fired ceramic glaze.
