before & after: barb’s dresser + wendy’s home exterior

every time i see an email from barb at knack studios in my inbox i get excited. her makeovers are always so lovely, and her latest project is no exception. this dresser is a piece that a customer of barb’s brought in to redo for her daughter’s bedroom. i love the mustard color and new knobs- it really gives the piece a whole new life. in addition to this lovely piece, barb is now selling her beautiful furniture rehabs at a new etsy shop! thanks, barb!

Barb’s dresser is lovely – as always. I love that she left the top natural; combined with the yellow and red knobs, it all looks fabulous.

And Wendy’s house – wow! I am especially loving the little porch off the back – beautiful spot.

Thanks for sharing these. Both are incredibly inspiring.

Wendy’s home is amazing! I’m originally from a town not too far from Westfield, so I am especially excited about this one!
I am in love with the big windows with the white curtains and all of the beautiful landscaping!
Beautiful work!

pam

wow! the time and effort Wendy put into the house is mind blowing. Absolutely fabulous! Now Wendy sit back and bask in the glory of a beautiful complete project!

Lilly

These photos are so inspiring! I’m in the middle of fixing my house up and sometimes it feels like a hopeless endeavor. The photos of Wendy’s house reminded me that it will all be worth it!

Karen

Wendy, your house is gorgeous! What a wonderful job. I have been looking for a few mintues and still cannot tell exactly how you added-on/renovated… I think that means you did an amazing job. I would love to hang out in that little three-season-type room with all the windows and the billowing white curtains. BRAVO!

Nadine

Wow… the dresser is absolutely stunning. Brilliant work. I think I would have never thought about using such a bold colour but it looks so great!

Erin

Wendy, this is EXACTLY what we are looking to do with our back porch, which is in a similar state of disrepair… please share your source for those gorgeous big windows! Do they open?

Tamisha

OMG, I have a friend who’s from Westfield. I just sent her a link to this. I can’t wait to hear what she has to say!

Gina

Wow, those Home Makeovers are incredible! I also love seeing more of Barb’s work from Knack Studios. Her work is wonderful!

claire

Oh my goodness! It is amazing how a pint of coat and a few smart details (like leaving the top bare wood) can transform a piece of furniture. Absolutely gorgeous.

Susan

Great job, Wendy, on your home’s exterior! It looks so inviting. Love the stained front door. Would you mind sharing your paint color for the siding? We are looking for a taupe and that just might be the one.

laura

the home makeover is AMAZING, I can’t even tell where the original house is in the after photos.

All of these comments are making my head spin…in a good way! Karen – we removed the 2 garages, built up (and believe it or not, over) the existing structure to allow for a second floor later on. We later removed the old roof from the inside and finished the second floor. Kind of a weird way to do it but we couldn’t afford to do it any way other than in stages! Erin – the windows were salvaged from an old building and I was lucky enough to get them from a friend who saved them. (I have used LOTS of salvaged materials in this house, a good way to add character to a house that has none!) Yes, the centers, top and bottom, do open. Susan – Stone Quarry (Glidden). Tricia – my husband is a landscaper so he gets all the credit there! Thanks design*sponge, for posting these!!

Wendy is a friend and yoga student of mine and I have seen the inside of her house; it’s amazing how they built the new part around the old, and integrated the older part right in in a unique way that works. She and her husband really had vision to see what this could become and they have done an inspiring job!

Wendy, I loved seeing the “finished” photos! (Of course I know that homes and gardens are NEVER finished.) Although I got to see this in the flesh, as you and Joe worked on it, these are great views of the IMMENSE transformation you have wrought. I agree with all of your admirers’ comments —and then much more—since I know that the interior is just as thoughtful, artful and charming as the outside. My hat’s off you you!!!

John rawlinson

Wendy and Joe show what can be done with hard work and imagination.
We have a number of houses like this in Westfield that need a little loving care, as well as many that have a long history behind them connected to William Seward and other well known historic characters.

Wendy, we all want to know: when are you going to show us the inside!!?!? Seriously, how can you taunt us like this? It’s so wrong.

Your house, btw, is fantastic. I’m sure you never thought you’d be finished with it, but wow, look at the payoff of living under construction for so long. If you decide to share more of the process, cost, or journey, definitely either post here or drop a link to where you post. You’re an inspiration!

Bea

They are so create and very inspiring! Thanks for that. Greatings from Germany, Bea

I love the yellow dresser! It reminds me of The Fantastic Mr. Fox (so much amazing warm tones in that movie!)
I need to start wearing yellow more often!
The house is also absolutely marvelous!

I agree – can’t wait to see the inside of Wendy’s great cottage transformation… Can we have a peak inside? And what a great job you’ve both done!

jess

We need a tour of Wendy’s house!!! Does she have a blog? If not, can D*S do it? Walkthrough! before and afters! Salvage material highlights! That is really an incredible transformation.

grace

hi guys!

we’ll see if wendy has a blog with the interior images. i got a small peek at the interior, but felt the exterior was the more dramatic transformation so i chose to focus on that :)

grace

Wendy

Hi guys, I do not have a blog or website but will setup a Flickr account so you can take a peek! Stay tuned…

Wendy

Rachel

What a transformation on both, especially the house. This makes me look forward to actually owning my own home.

Hello, I have just started blogging so I’m meeting alot of creative designers out here…..your work is fantastic. I have started a business called YOUnique, where I take unloved furniture and turn it into beautiful pieces . I have seen several items on your blog that are beautiful as well in addition to being YOUnique…..keep up the great job.

I love all the before and after posts, soes anyone have a manual for the making these sort of changes?

grace

simon

most of the changes people make are described briefly because we’ve done the basics of these steps in our diy section before.

I absolutely adore the rose knobs! Beautiful job on the dresser.

I am also strangely attracted to the paper mache animal plaque in the after photo…
