roundup 1
Don’t be ashamed to admit that you loved/love Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet. We all did/do. There is a time to save face and renounce everything you thought was cool in 1996, but that time isn’t now. You can now finally succumb to your full blown crush on Leonardo DiCaprio, I won’t tell a soul.

roundup 2
Without a doubt, my favorite part of the movie is still the Capulet vs. Montague southern California split. The Montagues sport Hawaiian shirts and loaf around the beach all day, while the Capulet’s flair for the dramatic has them spilling blood in style. Rooms are flooded with candles and it’s hard to escape the religious iconography that pervades every scene, but why would you want to? When it comes to Romeo and Juliet, you need to just embrace the mid-nineties. Preferably while time warping to the sound of The Cardigans in your parents car. -amy m.

Ooh, one of my favorite set designs EVER. Would I want to live in it? Not really, but it’s so transporting. I’m not ashamed!

Jesse Lu

ugh… I can’t believe you did it. This is maybe my favorite so far, but I say that every week it seems. I love the Juliet room and the candy cigarettes detail… and I still love The Cardigans, ain’t ashamed to say it.

Katie

I love love love Romeo and Juliet! Most people don’t get it but the over-the-top styling and flair throughout this flick are poignant AND edgy, not to mention totally befitting. Great roundup! xox

cde

bless you, amy! :) i love these Living In posts. the settings are the best part of baz luhrman movies (are you going to do Moulin Rouge? that would be awesome).

Emilee

I love it! The movie is so decadent and saturated with color and sound. It would be incredible to live in it (except the suicide part obviously).

Lindsay A

I really like the pistol hair dryer, but they are sold out on the site.

ginnybranch stelling

yessssssssssssss!!!! i knew this was what you posted as soon as i got your text- this makes me so happy!!!!! not enough exclamation points for one post- hallelujah! you keep outdoing yourself on these miss merrick! yahoo!!

ginnybranch stelling

this movie sparked my love affair with catholic art, leonardo dicaprio plastered all over my walls, and long, long hair. and my husband’s “i love thee” inscription on his wedding band!!!!! i am so happy!

Allyson

Love it! Love it so much. I’m pretty sure I have the 10 year anniversary addition DVD in my apartment somewhere!

Francesca

this movie is CRAZILY WONDERFUL!!! i love it and you did a great job with this post :)

Amy

this is spot on! my favorite one in this series…partly because i so clearly remember when this movie was huge.

thanks for the post!

jenni

oh, to be my lovesick younger self again…I loved/love this color saturated movie so much!

Julia

mid-nineties … parents car?

well thanks for making me feel about a hundred years old!

Trish

Not ashamed to admit that this is one of my favorite films (and looks) of all time. Thanks for bringing me back!

Vanessa

This is fabulous! I can’t tell you how many times I watched this version in high school because it was the only “hip” Shakespeare my teachers could find.

Erin

Par of this movie was filmed in Mexico City and it just oozes the style. That place is so special. I remember seeing lots of landmarks that were in Romeo and Juliet and feeling like there would be a Capulet and Montague beat down any second.

sarah

i am not ashamed to admit it! i own it + the soundtrack! the little choir singing when doves cry…em, yes. it was beautiful. amazing picks amy! my crush on leonardo dicaprio was at full pitch when this came out. i don’t feel the same about him anymore though…(and i’m in the pro john leguizamo team. he played an excellent little jerk)

Emma

Oh. My. God. “Living in” is reading my MIND! Each week is better than the last.

May I make a humble request? Can we have a holiday-themed “Living in?” Perhaps White Christmas? Or Christmas Carol?

elise

ha! that hair dryer is out of control! and the cardigans are being added to my pandora station right now. love it!

Compulsively Compiled

Amy, I love these posts. You are so good at putting it all together. I’m almost always embarrassingly out of it when it comes to movies so you’re totally helping me with that and my Christmas list all at the same time as I’m decided that my eldest daughter (15) would love all of your movie choices too.

taryn

lovelovelove this movie and the soundtrack! bought the dvd (to replace the vhs) this summer… :)

laura

oh my goodness. that picture at the top – i did a rather elaborate drawing of it in 8th grade. it’s still lurking in a dark corner of my closet. just looking at it gives me little shudders of embarrassment mixed with teenage lust/infatuation.

good choice!

Orchid Grey

oh my god- THE CARDIGANS! LEO! le sigh. Takes me back, and in such a good way. I’m gonna go add this to my Netflix queue……right now!

abby

I have to echo what Jesse Lu said, each week you out do yourself! How can we pick a favorite?

nina

I love everything about this post! i am obsessed with this movie!
The gold quilt is divine!

Lisa

I absolutely love this movie! There are songs from this soundtrack that have been kicking around on my top 100 playlist since this came out…

Jennifer

Swooooon! I am not ashamed to admit that this is one of my fave movies! It came out when I was 11, so clearly I didnt understand what the hell was going on, but I always loved the set design and overall look of this film. Gotta love Baz (and scrawny Leo)

Erica

Did this movie have visual style- yes! Was it good- no! Not even then- in fact, I walked out of it in the theatre (something I NEVER do). As soon as I heard them pronounce Romeo as Rome-eh-oh, I knew I couldn’t do it.

Cassie

when i was 20 in 1996 i really did want to live in this movie. so good! thanks for a great post!

Stephanie S.

Lucky Magazine just did a fashion post about this same film.

I love these posts. So creative. I was just thinking the other day, you could do “Living in Uncle Buck” – the John Hughes film. Early 90′s berets & round sunglasses oh my.

Cai

oohhhh romeo+juliet.. that came out when I was 7. When I heard that soundtrack for the first time in 7th grade it was the first thing that stopped me listening to Britney Spears and N’Sync… ‘Talk Show Host’ speaks to my soul… hahaha

Nadine

Awesome!!! This movie is gorgeous, glad you’ve included it in your series.

Moppa

never ashamed of my love for this movie, even when everyone else was rolling their eyes saying, “Leo as Romeo?? never” oh yes. great post

Julie

amy, you are amazing! this one is great. the pistol blow dryer is a genius touch. i can’t wait for your next ‘living in’!

Adrienne

thank you thank you thank you! I love your living in’s. You are covering so many nostalgic moments. Todays was one of the best.

kiki

lovelovelove!!! one of my favorites. i’ll admit still occasionally rocking out to the sound track. such a beautiful film!

Magchunk

Best “Living In” to date! I still have my 7th grade birthday list where I asked for a collection of vintage Virgin Mary’s and angels. My poor mother didn’t know what to think!

And of course in 8th grade we all dressed up as angels and stressed about not getting our hair to look as pretty as Claire Danes’!

ShocktheBourgeois

These posts are so cathartic- today a fleeting memory of my middle school self. Oh Leo, *sigh*

Thanks for the movie + decor love in the middle of my workday!

Jenny

I am so in love with that movie. When I taught Romeo and Juliet to my 9th grade class I was so excited to show them a version of Romeo + Juliet that I edited. They weren’t impressed and I had to think to myself “they just don’t get it.” hehe

Great post!

Jennifer

This movie is definitely one of my favourites. I love Romeo and Juliet’s halloween costume, and this is still the only version of the play that can make me tear up at the end when the lovers die.

Shiloe

This post takes me so far back! I forgot how much I loved the set design this movie. That abalone chandelier is ridiculous! (In a good way)

Dantelle

RE: “this is still the only version of the play that can make me tear up at the end when the lovers die.”

Way to spoil the ending for the rest of us, Jennifer! ;-)

lindsey clare

no shame! haha. R+J is one of the best movies of all time, in my opinion. Baz Lurhman’s vision and direction truly shines in this interpretation of what is already such an engaging story. love it!

and love your SoCal/bordering on trashy/religious icon mash-up.

chelsea

Yay! Love the 90′s and the Claire Danes of the 90′s is currently my style icon:) Embarassed to admit I’ve never seen this film, though!:)

adeleine

Perfect post. I loved BL’s take on R+J primarily for the interior shots (especially the plethora of candles/neon crosses in the church at the end). Thank you!

msd

I’m not ashamed to admit that I loved this movie when I was a teenager. Strictly Ballroom too! He lost me at Moulin Rouge though and I still can’t bring myself to see Australia. Luhrman’s wife, Catherine Martin, is the production designer on all of his films and I think she deserves a lot of credit. Even when the films are bad they look cool and interesting!

ZaGirl

Oh my…. *swooon*

R+J = <3

My husband and I went to see it for our first date. I was 18 and he was 19 and I balled like a baby at the end (even though I KNEW how it was going to turn out…I kept whispering "open your eyes! open your eyes!).

Wonderful colors, images, music, tatoos, candles, and I want Juliet's headboard!

Julia

OOoooohhh watched again the other day after about 10 years!! So so so very clever…and oh Leo…he was such a wee boy.
You might like this ring for abit of angsty love..

Stolen Girlfriends Club..great NZ designers..the LOve Bound Ring

Sophie Isobel Designs

When I was 13, this film changed my life. I’m now an English and Film teacher and I still adore the film and love to teach it. Bring on all that wonderful iconography. Fabulous post! I love it all.

hrhkat

…Im so iffy about this movie…
I guess its because Ive lived in Los Angeles my whole life and Ive been to many parts that this film was shot in,and I recognize everything, so I guess Its like im already Living In it…

That and the massive amounts of candles scare me because nothing good ever comes out of having hundreds of candles in a small condensed area.
But I do love the chandelier, the headboard, and the blanket…

Gugaw

I LOVE this film, never ever any shame about this! It’s beautiful in so many ways, possibly my favourite film ever.

Cassie

Ohh my god, I can’t believe there’s a post about this movie. It’s my favorite since I first saw it with my boyfriend. Great post.

amy m.

For some reason I thought this one was going to get a lot of eye rolls! Glad to hear we’re all teenage girls at heart.

Laura Gaskill

Okay, you are totally reigniting my crush on Leo…I loved this movie, and I so wanted to be Clare Danes in those angel wings and gorgeous white dress!

And I would not at all mind bringing home that satin quilt, gate headboard, beeswax candles, and rose clips…

JC

I’d also like to out myself as a shameless R+J fan. Although I haven’t seen the movie itself in years, I still listen to the soundtrack–including that Cardigans song!–all the time.

The picks for this Living In are just spot on. You have such an amazing eye, Amy!

kim

I was mad for Leonardo after seeing this movie, all the way including scrapbook and a sticker collection (which I’ll never admit outside the realms of the internet!)
My crush has passed but this movie is still great, so is the soundtrack (which had nifty cdrom extras as well). The outfits were Prada if I remember correctly, I’ve always loved that blue flowery shirt.

N. Bassett

I love this movie. Everytime I watch it I fall in love with Leonardo DiCaprio all over again.

Jessica

GAH, this movie is so good. I don’t care what anyone says. (maybe that’s the angst ridden 18 yr old in me being angstily rebellious)

Love the decor/iconography, very vivid and it really brings me back. Oh, that skinny blonde Leo with that piece of hair constantly in his face. Love that. And, really, weren’t we ALL Claire Danes in the 90′s? Aren’t we all still?

grayscout

I can still remember exactly what happened the night I saw this. I have to say that as great as Baz is, his wife Catherine Martin needs some credit. She comes up with the best costumes and was the production designer and art director for Romeo and Juliet. PS, I still turn the movie off before it gets sad…

Helen

I watched the “Making Of” on the DVD and it’s actually supposed to be set in Miami, not SoCal (I thought it was LA too…)

kimberly

one of my all time fav movies. I think I was 13 when it came out and my best friend and I drooled over Leo! Great soundtrack, too. And great finds that really capture this movie!

Amy Bird Tweets

This post is brilliant! I love this movie and I loved the clothes, props, and cinematography! You really captured the mood and how to create your own Romeo & Juliet theme at home. Nice post!

stevie

favorite living in ever. i grew up in a catholic family but i am not personally a believer so i love the comfortable familiarity and irony of being surrounded by religious iconography. beautifulll

Lynn

only one of my top favorite movies of all time…amazing. i love the candy cigarettes – also a favorite, and crucial to my childhood.

Joy

Hands down, this is my FAVORITE “Living In” post ever. All that’s missing is the fish tank.
:-)

[email protected]

My heart literally skipped a beat when I saw this. This movie visually shaped so much of what I find beautiful and crave and I am realizing completely explains my obsession with neon and Mexican art. thanks for posting!

ink and post

wow… i love it! And judging from the responses everyone else did too. Seeing this movie in the theater as a tween was almost too much to bear!

hellolover

I have no problem admitting that I love this movie! I actually own it on DVD. I have to say my favorite part is when they are staring at each other through the fish tank. Love the room designs!

Carla in Tacoma

What a post and what memories! I lived and breathed this movie in 1996. Between MSCL and R+J I couldn’t get enough of the sets, soundtracks, costumes and Claire Danes in the mid-90′s. Still love them:)

Jenny

I first loved Leonardo when he was in Growing pains and heard about this movie for 2 years before it was released. I watched it on the opening day – boxing day and saw it another 2 times at the movies and love, love, loved it and Leonardo. Thanks for taking me back. I was just thinking about that fishtank the other day.

Kay

I’ve never been able to sit through the entire movie. I loved Zeffirelli version my class watched in high school and this one is just so different!
I do love the set design though and after reading this I feel like I should give it another chance.

Amy P

Omg, i loveddd Romeo and juliet, but i was born in 1997, so i didnt see it until earlier this year, but ive had a masssive obsession with Leonardo Dicaprio for years :)
