today’s before & afters are starting off with a backyard transformation from designer kristen james. kristen and her husband made over the yard behind their 1950s lakewood, california home with their own two hands. i love the way they created a covered seating area and pergola to cover it- it’s going to look so beautiful when all the plants start to mature. thanks to kristen for sharing!
[have a before & after you'd like to share on d*s? just shoot me an email right here with your (low res, please!) images]
*quick note: before & afters have been a little slow/light over the past 2 weeks, but i hope to have them pick back up next week.

this before & after comes from michelle at wind hula. she found this frame at an estate sale, cut a peg board to size and created her own custom jewelry display. great work, michelle!

i’m a total crazy cat lady so i couldn’t resist this pet-centric makeover from kristi of addicted 2 decorating. kristi’s neighbor gave her this secretary which was in rough shape. rather than giving it away, kristi decided to convert it into a pet center where she could store all of her pet supplies, food, and provide a place for the cats to nap. great work, kristi!

I love the pet center! So much classier than those huge cat scratching posts at pet stores. I might have to create something like this for my two kitties.
that kitty residence is the cutest thing EVER!!
the pet center is adorable — the cats must love to have a cozy spot to curl up! very cute.
The pet center is beautifully done! Bravo!
Love all of these but especially the backyard transformation!! Anytime a homeowner opts for landscaping over grass, they’ve won my heart forever. And it looks like such a cool place to hang!
Cat center: GENIUS!
CUTEST PET CENTER!!!
OMG I love the kitty center! I have seen those ugly secretaries in the Thrift Stores for only few bucks, but I never thought of that idea! How clever! I need this for my kittens too!
omg. i am now officially, obsessively on the lookout for a piece of furniture like this to convert. i’m thinking of a side opening and a little private kitty loo, safe from snacking doggies? OH YESSSSSS! ;)
thank you to my name twin!
The cat center is too adorable. We just built a kitty condo for about $45 instead of the $200+ they want for the large multi level ones like we built. I will definitely have to make a kitty center out of a desk now. I had a flame point Siamese that looked identical to the one in the photo! They’re the best cats!
Is that a Clayton home in the backyard make-over? I’d be curious to know how the couple feels about it. I’m really drawn to them.
Another fan of the pet center!
I have been desperately searching for a solution to my cat’s newfound obsession with biting his water bowl and dragging it across the floor. Who knew I’d find such a solution on Design*Sponge? Off to the Goodwill to find a desk!
The cat house is such an innovative idea! It wishes I can have cats to make that for them and I’m allergic to cats!
Great idea with the jewelry frame too.
Gee, I thought my cat was spoiled! Love the back yard makeover!
Andrea D – It’s our backyard home office that let us add an “extra room” to our tiny house. It was a modern shed kit that we assembled ourselves. The website is http://www.mondern-shed.com. We absolutely love it!
Those are some lucky kitty cats! Love the patio too; makes me want to kick back and have a brew.
I really love that backyard makeover! Such a beautiful space to love and enjoy.
This is absolutely gorgeous! I love how she re-used the old frame and turned it into a jewelery holder.
The backyard makeover is just as gorgeous!
awwwww look at the kitty cats! i think that is a fantastic little home for them!
my favorite before and after to date. my cat is longing for a humble abode complete with his very own food center. for him, it’s all about the food.
Oh my !! ! this is awesome. very inspirational .
Love the garden makeover – it gives my heart to continue with my own, which has been going VERY slowly…
Wow — that pet center is amazing! What a fantastic idea, and what great vision!!
What kind of paint did you use to pain your furniture?
Ok, I don’t even have cats and I want that pet center! The jewelry holder is great too – I’ve made something similar with a piece of colored burlap and a frame – works great because the burlap has large enough holes to hook earrings in, but enough grip to not let them slip.
my cats need that house
Wow, three really great re-designs!! That backyard came out amazing… but I think I’m most impressed with that kitty center. BRILLIANT IDEA!! I wish I was that handy. (And where on earth did she find a tiny mattress like that?!)
love the back yard makover. great job!
Ohhh! I love the kitty retreat! I want that for my kitsy too!!!
