Kat Macleod’s North Carlton

by Grace Bonney

Ok so today I am super-excited to introduce one of Melbourne’s best known and most admired illustrators, Kat Macleod! Kat’s work probably needs little introduction, but just in case you need reminding – here are some examples of her exquisite work. Kat makes her beautiful illustrations by pulling together carefully selected fabric scraps, sparkly details, vibrant puddles of bright watercolor and delicate hand-stitching… there’s nothing quite like a Kat Macleod original.

If you’re in Melbourne you can still catch Kat’s current exhibition at Lamington Drive Gallery in Fitzroy, until November 15th! Too gorgeous for words… don’t miss it!

Miss Macleod is based in one of my favorite suburbs, North Carlton! North Carlton is a beautiful leafy green area, characterized by it’s lovely wide tree-lined streets, cute Victorian cottages and the fantastic cafes and restaurants along Rathdowne st. It’s relaxed, friendly and so pretty – perfect for afternoon bike-riding or lazy weekend breakfasts.

Kat’s North Carlton favorites

Frisck: frisck is a swish boutique with lovely dresses and some of my favourite brands including cohen et sabine ( http://www.cohenetsabine.com.au/ ) and Gorman (http://www.gorman.ws/default.aspx )they also have a big fluffy white cat. i love a store with a resident pet.

north: north is our closest cafe, we go there on the weekend for breakfast sometimes. they have very good coffee and food, and a wall which they have covered with hand-drawn black texta faces.

milk bar: (‘milk bar’ in australia is similar to ‘deli’ or ‘bodega’ in new york) this milk bar has absolutely everything you could ever need. except ear plugs (for when the neighbour’s smoke alarm malfunctions).

curtain square: a lovely green park with a very small hill.

library: the local library looks best at night with the 3 big lights lit up in the corner window.

tre bicchieri: they have the best coffee in the whole world. it’s also a cool dark little place with walls lined with shelves full of wine and cute italian drinks and things.

Thanks so much to Kat for her beautiful cheery illustration and fab Carlton North recommendations! If you’re in Melbourne and have not yet checked out her current exhibition, go visit Lamington Drive this weekend! Like all the bestest illustrators in the land, Kat is represented by the Jacky Winter Group!

If you’re keen to learn more about the wonderful Kat Mac, you can check out an interview I posted last year… and more recently I also shared a little sneak peek of her gorgeous apartment here!
