We Are The Friction

image12
We Are The Friction is a book of shortfiction and illustrations, coordinated by Jez Burrows and Lizzy Stewart. The concept involved 24 international writers and illustrators being allocated into pairs, and each then produced new work inspired by the work of their partner. Illustrators include Jon Klassen, Nigel Peake, Nous Vous and Verity Keniger. There are only 1000 copies so first in best dressed.

I’m really loving these peeks at the illustration – I’m curious what the stories are like.

Are any of these illustrations for sale apart from the book…as fine art prints? I love the sailboat!

To Kiki, and anyone else interested in prints:

All of the images, bar those by Andrew Holder, are available as super high quality digital archival prints. In some cases, the original art is available too! All the details are available in the Flickr group, so please email us if you’d like to buy anything:

Also thanks to both Amy and Design*Sponge!

I love the first illustration – the iced sea with the icebergs and boat!
Does anyone know who the illustrator is?

they definitely look similar, but they also look like an awful lot of other covers out there right now. both remind me of mcsweeny’s covers and even earlier, the old “whole earth” catalogs.

btw- even vague accusations of copying are taken seriously around here, so if you’d like to accuse something of being inspired, in quotation marks, please leave a real name. anonymous claims don’t sit well with us at d*s. claims like this can effect people’s careers and shouldn’t be whipped off with fake names, emails or handles.

I agree that there is some visual similarity with Nicholas Felton’s work, I was surprised that it wasn’t designed by him! I love that style. No idea if they were influenced by or aware of his work, obviously. I think it’s tricky when visual styles or motifs sort of bleed into the visual culture (eg daytum.com, and infographics in general), so it’s not really cut and dried as semi-direct inspiration or riffing on a motif, etc. Anyway, I really admire Felton’s work, I think he’s a brilliant designer. These illustrations look great, too.
