paper: tear, fold, rip, crease, cut

115
not too long ago, i was visiting the museum of modern art with my dad while he was in town on a business trip. as we wondered around checking out current exhibitions we stumbled upon a paper exhibition, and i was immediately tempted to check it out. a few minutes later, i found myself increasingly disappointed at the curation of the show, and found myself longing for some of the incredible paper art i’ve seen online over the years. perhaps it was a generational thing, or just a longing for something a little edgier, but when i first checked out the book paper: tear, fold, rip, crease, cut from black dog publishing, i said “THIS is what that show should have been like”.

paper: tear, fold, rip, crease, cut features incredible paper art from the fields of art, fashion and design. there’s a huge range of work shown, using techniques like origami, paper cutting, modular folding, ripping, and all sorts of methods in between. there are 50 fantastic artists represented in the book, as well as information on the history of paper, from it’s beginning as a material to its roll in contemporary art and design.

Wow! There truly is some amazing work here. It never ceases to amaze me what people can create with something as mundane as paper..

Incredible images. Also, can I just say I love that your dad blogs…a talent that clearly runs in the family!

This just blows my mind. I’m gonna have to sacrifice an old book and give it a try.

Grace, I agree – I saw that exhibit as well and expected something much more magical, as there are so many wonderful artists experimenting with paper in ways I could never dream of.

This book looks beautiful! I missed the MoMA paper exhibit, but there’s an exhibit at MAD (http://madmuseum.org/) this October called “Slash: Paper Under The Knife” that looks fantastic. I saw the work of a few of the participating artists at Pulse Art Fair this spring, and I’ve been counting down the days to the show ever since…

wasn’t that a disappointing show? i was so bummed. i mean, some was totally lovely, but when you look at work like this, it’s hard to look at it the same way…

Jen

I’m so very curious how they do this.. O.O It looks amazing.

This book is going up as one of my recommendations. I’m constantly amazed and stunned to realize there are so many incredibly creative geniuses out there circling the universe for me yet to learn about. Thank you!! I hope I have time in my lifetime to learn and see so many more!

I’ve ordered the book! Can’t wait to have it in my hands …

Amazing creations. Museum quality. If only I could show something like this in my little art gallery.

So gorgeous. Does anyone know the artists who did 103, 86 and 47?

Thanks!
