i’m a huge fan of suzani embroidery, especially when used as a fabric for furniture makeovers. so when i saw this makeover from clare at the southwest school of art and craft i was excited. claire used a beautiful piece of suzani fabric to recover this pink highback chair and i love the results. so much drama and color! great work, claire! click here to see more of clarie’s suzani work for sale at her etsy shop.

next up is a great kitchen makeover from kyla at kylaroma. kyla lives in a 100 year old “starter home” that she made over with only $200. she wallpapered over the basic melamine cabinets and used turquoise paint on the backsplash to make more graphic. it’s a simple but stylish makeover- great work, kyla!

simple yet stylish. i like it.
This makes me want to actively SEEK a starter home like Kyla’s whenever I decide to buy a house. How much fun is that project, and how ADORABLE is that kitchen!?
That chair is amazing! I want! xo
$200 ARE YOU KIDDING??!! Great job! Way to make your space your own! BRAVO!!
Kitchen looks great!
Whoa! That chair screams colour (in a good way!)!!
the wallpaper choice is fabulous!
Those chairs are amazing! However, I am not sure about the prices she’s selling them for in her etsy store. I think it’s a little over the top considering that the chairs she starts with are second hand.
I simply adore this kitchen!!

i think those prices are actually pretty reasonable. suzani fabric can be very, very expensive and the cost of upholstery isn’t a small one. so $975 may seem high, but if you took that fabric to an upholster it might not be much less to have done…

LOVE the chair. That kitchen looks great–nice and calming!
I really love the combo of bright backsplash and subtle wallpaper. It looks fantastic! I think I may steal the look for an old pair of wooden steps I’m using as a display:)
The only place that chair would feel at home is in a ‘Betsy Johnson’ retail store.
Regarding the kitchen…great color pallet but you realestate agent may ask you to ‘make it less personal.’
That kitchen is amazing!
i would understand the multiple “make it less personal” comments (on this post and the headboard post) if this was a real estate website, but these are people’s homes. isn’t this one of the places where you are allowed to be “personal” in life?
and that chair is welcome in my home, which looks nothing like a betsy johnson store.

This is beautiful Kyla! I’m so proud of you, you have such a beautiful touch.
Might I suggest painting the legs of your chair a bright color…seen it done…amazing
Grace, it’s so wonderful that you can deal with comments like the “make it less personal” ones with such, well… grace. Personally, I want to reach through my computer and wring people’s necks sometimes. Making our homes personal is the whole point of everything everyone on this site is doing. Way to go, Kyla! Beautiful work! I’m planning a budget kitchen makeover right now and am totally inspired.
Both are awesome!
I’ve seen that chair on a site recently and it really stuck out to me. It’s just an eye-catching look that was done so well. These are so inspiring!

well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. but thankfully, so am i. i rarely step into the comment section (there’s enough of me on the site already) but sometimes i disagree and feel the need to step in.

The chair looks absolutely stunning!!! xx
Thanks for all the great compliments on the kitchen!
The “make it less personal” comment in interesting- that never occurred to me. The people buying in our neighbourhood are all dual income, no kids, young buyers- and there’s under 1% vacancy here. I figure that something modern works for that audience.
Ultimately, cooking in the kitchen is way more fun now & we’re not looking to sell. I’m just glad the 1980′s panels & bee stencils are gone!
Re making your space less personal – plenty of time to do that when you’re ready to move to another home. I had my small house interior painted white with ecru trim when I was ready to let it go, for around $1000.
I adore these chair makeover posts! Keep them coming! And a ‘how to” post would be most welcome.
That chair would go perfect in my living room with my DWR sofa and Corbusier lounge! It’s all about what else is in the space and the final room.
I look at this blog to see people’s homes and ideas, not how to stage for resale. I deal with that enough in my profession! Even though it’s not my style, I can take that wallpaper idea and run with it in a way that is.
I’m still afraid to tackle my kitchen. What to do with Pepto Bismal pink plastic wall tiles?! Paint them? Destroy them? Relish in the vintage kitsch?
Now that chair…. that chair is my sense of lovely, whistle-through-the-day color.
This whole real estate HGTV movement to depersonalize a home is bunk. Most home buyers are looking for a home to look fresh and clean, well maintained and clutter free. A sterile and bland house does not project a feeling of warmth and personality.
BTW, that chair is amazing!
random question: kyla, where did you get the pot rack? i have been wavering on whether or not having one in my kitchen would feel too heavy and close (i also have a tiny galley kitchen), but the one you have is really sweet and simple, and i think i might be sold on the idea!
Adwoa- The pot rack & the magnetic knife ‘rack’ are both from ikea, I’m quite sure the pit rack was from the GRUNDTAL series, though it’s not on the website from what I can see.
am i missing something…sorry, what pot rack?
stellaquinn – Sorry! I thought there was another picture up of the back wall of my kitchen, but it’s been taken down, or maybe wasn’t posted. My post is here with pictures of the hanging pot rack over the stove.
I love the quaint look in the kitchen.
Does anyone else like the “before” kitchen more than the “after”?
I like the before better for both the chair and the kitchen. To each his own.
I like the wallpaper on the lower cabinets. Can you share the source?
