heather hollern is part of the team at quince in portland, orgeon, the beautiful flower shop shares the space with studio olivine (featured in a special sneak peek here). today we have a look into heather’s home and garden in the mississippi neighborhood of north portland which she and her husband purchased in 2004. it’s such a relaxing soothing interior, and then to think they have their own garden (complete with their own chickens) just by stepping out the door. we’ll be back next with a sneak peek from quince partner, liza lubell, so stay tuned. in the meantime, check out more images of heather’s home right here. {thanks, heather!} -anne

The white dishes were just something I would pick up every now and then from thrift stores. I finally displayed them all together and liked the way they contrasted against the dark wall.

We completely refinished all the walls and ceilings in the living room and dining room. They all had a popcorn texture on them, which we plastered over. We also took off the really bad tile around the fireplace and re-plastered that. The Jens Risom loveseats were salvaged from the University of Wisconsin, where we went to grad school, and reupholstered.

Our kitchen is in the middle of a remodel and not so photogenic right now. We did just finish the wall of subway tile with the hood. We’ve temporarily turned the nook into a little lounging area, where our daughter spends a lot of time reading and playing while we’re in the kitchen.

In the bathroom, we refurbished an old clawfoot tub and tiled the back wall. We also built a convenient storage shelf for toilet paper above the toilet.

What an amazing job you did! Your color scheme is so soothing, what a nice retreat to come home to! I love the t.p. shelf!!! That is the best storage idea yet! I somehow (weirdly) find great comfort in knowing I have lots of t.p. stored…
It’s so simple and serene. Wonderful job!
Gorgeous!
loving the light fixture. where is it from
This is fabulous! LOVE the table…and the tp…(who doesn’t).
Your “Click Here” is mis-coded – it says 2009/06 instead of /07.
Love the gray dining room and toilet paper display.
Ok, I’m sold on the grey walls. I’ve been debating what direction to go with our living/dining area.
And the TP – I love it!! It is very comforting to know, as a guest, exactly where the spare toilet paper is. No painfully awkward search of the cupboards.
This house is so cute inside and out! I love it! The MCM light fixtures are great and I love the teapot collection and the blue dessert platters on the coffee table.
this is SO BEAUTIFUL. i love the white dishes against the gray wall. delightful.
was wondering if anyone knew the colors used on the outside of the house and the grey walls, they are fantastic.
oh this is so fun seeing both your place and Liza’s! Love the grey walls in the dining room with all the white teapots!
This is great!
I’m so happy to finally see a beautiful decor with wool moldings. I have been looking for inspiration for my own house renovation and this is just it.
ps: If anyone has more photos of houses with wood molding, think of me and send me the link
thanks
is that a dewey decimal storage cabinet? where did you find that!
I LOVE the colors on both the living room and dining room walls – please post what they are!!
Beautiful Place. So zen, I love what you did with the fireplace. Those love seats are incredibly cool as well.
I love the calm and earthy wall colors and the amazing light fixtures. And the display of the white ceramics is so lovely.
Thanks so much for all the nice comments. The paint in the dining room is from Miller Paint and is called Barn Rafter. It actually has a lot of brown in it as well as a touch of purple, which seems to soften it up. The exterior paint is from a recycled paint company here in Portland, Metro Paint. My husband bought a bunch of different colors and mixed them all together. I came home from work one day and he had painted the front of the house.
joslyn, the light fixture in the nook came from a vintage store. I’m not sure of the maker.
Jason, I wish I knew what the original purpose of that cabinet was. They were throwing it away at The University of Wisconsin Med school. It’s really great. It has perfect sized drawers.
I LOVE the teapots in the dining room, and the toilet paper shelves! That looks perfect.
love your home, Heather!
Just gorgeous!!
Where did you buy the tissue holder on your storage cabinet? So clever.
Gorgeous home. Simply beautiful. I love the metal mesh chairs around the dining table–where did you find them?
so simple and pretty. i love your display of dishes!
I love all the special touches, so pretty.
Really beautiful.
I love your wall color choices–do you remember what they are?
love the aqua dessert stands on the coffee table! Beautiful color scheme.
K, the living room color I mixed myself. It’s just a really light powdery green.
Sol, the tissue paper holder was something we built ourselves. When we tore the drywall out of the bathroom, we decided to make a little built in shelf between the beams.
Kathleen, the chairs around the table were originally from an outdoor patio set. The brand is Emu, but we found them second hand off craigslist.
Sol, sorry, I completely misread that. The tissue holder is Lotta Jansdotter.
I love the west elm day bed. I hope to find the space for that exact one someday!
what a great house. Show us the kitchen when it’s done :-)
Love the table. Is it from ikea?
Love the TP and the white dish displays, very reflective of each other. Looks like a lovely peaceful place.
Caitlyn, it’s the parsons table from West Elm. It’s nice because it has a large leaf and can expand to fit a lot of people.
Such a great space :) I really like her choice of paint in the dining room – and the white ceramic pieces look amazing against the grey color.
I love how the toilet paper gives the bathroom a design element! Who would have thought? I know people who purposely hide the TP because they think it’s ugly.
I love the shade of gray you used in the dining room – the birch shelves and white pottery look fantastic with it!
Great idea for the TP – genius!
Where did you get that great light over the dining room table. I want one.
Are you sure that is Grey? I usually turn away from Grey but am drawn right into this stunning room!
Luv Luv the toilet paper shelf!
I would move in here without a second thought.

Manette, that is one of the George Nelson bubble lights. I got it at a store called Hive, but I think you can find them anywhere they carry the mid century classics. They also come in a few different shapes.
respect how you are redoing the place up! hex tiles and fireplace are charming.
What color do you have for the kitchen nook? I love it!
Katherine, that is a random paint that I grabbed out of the home depot seconds rack. It’s just a true medium gray, but paired really well with the light greenish gray ceiling. I wish I could give you more specifics.
Love it! Did you get the UW discards at SWAP or is there another resource I’m unaware of in Madison?
Lovely space! – Where did you get the Asian style day bed in the nook?
Becky, We did used to go to SWAP every now and then, but the loveseats and drawers were just lucky finds that people were getting rid of.
Brigid, That daybed is from West Elm.
I never thought of toilet paper could be a work of art, until now! Very clever!
I HAVE to know what that vine is! The one that is so beautifully encircling that cute white bench.
