this first before & after comes from whitney who, along with her “guitar hero”, decided to make over their kitchen with some chalkboard and regular paint. i’ve always loves chalkboards in the kitchen and this is a great way to keep grocery lists and let guests or family members know what is in each cabinet. great work, whitney!

next up is a before & after with a how-to attached. d*s reader roxy sent over this fun little clock makeover she finished and was kind enough to share her basic instructions. want to know how? just CLICK HERE (or click “read more” below) to read her instructions after the jump. thanks, roxy!

Roxy’s How-To
1. Find an old/ugly clock at the thrift store, and one that has screws on the back so you can easily take the cover off.
2. Unscrew the cover and gently pull off the hands, make sure not to yank or pull too hard as to keep from bending the hands. Then pull the battery piece out [this might need some nudging or yanking]
3. On a piece of cardstock, cardboard etc. draw your image and punch a tiny hole [no bigger than the rod the hands are attached too] in the center, or wherever you see fit and then cut the image out.

4. Place the drawing on top of the battery holder with the little pin rod poking through the whole, then push the clock hands gently back on. With colored masking tape cut out numbers, shapes etc.
5. Place where you would like on the wall…evenly of course! ;)
6. Now to hang the clock/battery part, just take a long piece of masking tape and start to fold it in half but not all the way down, when you get half way, place one side on top of the battery holder and the other on the back part…then take a good size tack and tack the tap to the wall in the middle of the numbers.
Now you have a brand new super cute AND affordable clock!

Roxy,
I love it. I’m happy to see you’re still creating wonderful items!!
The cupboards are a great idea, and the clock is really cute!
though needn’t have to buy an ugly one from the thrift shop only to use the clocks’ hand set..
Love both the chalkboard cupbords and the clock! What a great way to add personality into your home. Thank you!
VERY cute kitchen. helps you imagine the (inexpensive) possibilities when you are looking at real estate and the current owners have not upgraded a thing!
I really like the chalkboard paint on the cupboards idea but something about the off-white color selected is grating on me in combo with those white appliances…
I adore the clock and computer area!
the kitchen looks great, it really made a transformation. when i re-did my kitchen i wanted make it more lively. i added some new and colorful items to it as well. you should definitely check out Designs by Lolita (www.thelolitastore.com). i bought a few of her candles and glasses to spice up the kitchen and it really personalized it and put so much more color into my home.
Roxy! Yeah, love the clock. I do belive it’s “time” to come back to BK for a visit…
Seriously??? This may be cute in a crafty way, but I don’t know if it is design. Actually, I do know…. it isn’t. If it looks like something my Nan would do, it is not design.
matthew-
thanks for the clarification on the definition of design- i think we all can sleep a little easier knowing you don’t like roxy’s clock and whitney’s kitchen.

LOL @grace, that made my day. The elf clock’s adorable… it has the funniest expression! Those cabinets are great. Chalkboards in/near the kitchen are so convenient!
ROXY!!! You amaze me. Do you ever stop working on new projects? I love the clock – super cute!
hmmm… that’s not such a nice thing to say Matthew….. but I am curious to know what your definition of design is?
and I adore the cupboards by the way! Would look even cuter with children’s drawings plastered all over. ;)
This clock is absolutely adorable and I have to send kudos for the little elf – great drawing! I’m going to look into doing this with my talented teenage daughter. It will be fun to see what she comes up with. Thank you!
Your elf has something mischievous in mind, Roxy!
I did something similar a while back – just hung the clock bit alone on the wall, and using coloured chalk I drew in the 4 main numbers.
Whitney, your kitchen transformation is amazing – from a cave to a campy fun place to hang. LLL the chalk panels.
Very nice B&F work !
Just a tiny remark for the chalk wrinting on the kitchen, there is a accent upon the E in “BON APPÉTIT” (even if it is capitalized). But like I said except from that tiny thing what a great work !!
What a neat DESIGN. Just love it.
