before & after: kati’s dining room + dominique’s hall

katidriscollbefore
d*s reader kati driscoll purchased a victorian home from the 1870s that was in pretty rough shape. her dining room has heavy black soon along the walls and carpeting, holes in the wall and all sorts of pet damage. so she went to town on the space and decided to make things over! my favorite project of hers is the dining room- she ripped up the aging carpets, found beautiful heart pine flooring underneath, and sanded and stained the floors along with help from her dad and brother (her mom did the polyurethane coating!). after the floors were done, kati added wallpaper from ferm living and and a new coat of paint. as it that wasn’t enough, she also decided to open up the fireplace to expose the brick! great work, kati! click here for more pictures…

dominiquebefore
this bold staircase makeover comes from dominique plourde of made in quebec. she recently had the urge to paint the walls of a staircase leading to her basement so she decided to take a risk! after taping up a square pattern in the hall, dominique painted the hallway a vivid mix of pinks and reds- and now she has a cheerful pattern to welcome her every time she visits the basement. great work, dominique!

I am loving the dining room. The wallpaper and over all color combinations are perfect. Great work!

Aimee

The wallpapers are available for sale on our site – the link in the post goes to ferm LIVING’s Danish site. Kati emailed us her photos last week and we thought they were such a lovely example of how wallpaper can completely change the look of a room!

That staircase looks like it took an extraordinary amount of patience – well worth it! I am not so steady handed.

Thanks for all the compliments on the room. I couldn’t have done it without my family!

Eliss

The staircase is amazing!!! I would love to do something like that.

WOW! i love the dining room – the blue is beautiful and i love the scary rabbit on the wall above the fireplace! and the stairway? there are no words to describe it – simply amazing!

Maya

Love that blue paint! Does anyone know what color that is?

tara

Wow, I love the staircase.. so wonderland. I also love the dining room and I must have that Rabbit. Please do tell where you picked it up!

Dominique

I guess I was quite in a wild mood when I decided to do the staircase. Waiting for another of those moods for a future project (as “crazy” and fun ;-)

Tiffany

Wow! Those are both amazing! I love the bold color in the dining room and the staircase is just gorgeous!

Kirsten

Love the dining room, great job! Please share the paint color if you know it! Thx :)

jenny

I love the dining room. The faux mantle is my favorite with the bricked off fireplace. The weird porcelain rabbit above it makes me think of the whole Through the looking glass thing. That hall makes me dizzy as heck but it’s fantastic none the less!

Lisa Marie

This is RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME!!!!! If I had the patience and time to do something like this, it would be on the top of my list!

Krystle

Oh…my…lawd….that dining room is stunning! I love how rich it looks. I’m in love. And the hallway looks fantastic even in the “during” stages! Thanks again for some awesome inspiration!

Scribble Monkey

That is incredible! I would love to do it, but I know I would get down to my last square and my brush would slip…ruining the whole thing…haha

kati

For everyone asking about the paint color, it is Valspar (we got it at Lowe’s) Danish Blue in eggshell. It took a little under 2 cans to do the room. It only took 2 coats for full coverage on the walls.

Dominique- Your stairwell to basement is one of the most CREATIVE makeovers I have seen in a long time. It shows that if you have a moment of inspiration you should GO FOR IT!

jenny

love them both. but how was the hall done? One set of squares and rectangles painted, paint dries, remove tape, make another set of tape shapes, paint, dry, remove, then another?

Debbi S. in Texas

love the stairs; that stairway light really brings down the modern effect; can you find a cube/square shape light to use instead?

Kati,
I am a location scout for various national magazines. I love what you did to your dining room. Would like to submit it for possible publication in Before & After magazine. Please contact me at 415-225-1903 or albaworks@gmail.com if interested. Thanks and nice work!

Wow, Dominique, what a lot of work you did on your stairs…I love decorating but this must have taken way too much patience that I don’t have !! Félicitations !!!

Vie Lewis

wow ,,, what talent.. better not go down the stairs with a hangover lol

Benjamin Moore Paint

Really well done, the walls look great. Do you know what brand of paint you used for the walls? Looks like benjamin moore but its hard to say with any certainty.
