kwangho lee

as an art major in college, i spent an awful lot of time making things out of styrofoam: sculptures, models for buildings, you name it. so when i saw these beautiful pieces by kwangho lee on kate pruitt’s site i was blown away. i always felt so frustrated and limited by styrofoam (guess that’s why i’m not an artist) so it was inspiring to see the way kwangho really made the material sing. when i first saw the lamp below i thought it was wood or some sort of hand carved heavier material- but it’s foam. wow.

and then there are the knitted lamps- equally cool and just as impressive. they’re not for everyone, but i think they’re such a beautiful way to play with shadow and light. click here for more information on kwangho’s work.

i met kwangho’s stand mate at TENT London in the fall. he said that kwangho’s mother knits the lamps for him!! haahah i thought it was funny. he was laughing…i think he said it just to joke.

So great to find Kwangho Lee on your website. He needs all the exposure that he can get. I had the pleasure of meeting with him and photographing his work in his studio in Seoul. I’m still in awe of his work and look forward to seeing more from this talented artist.
