it’s always fun to see what decorative painting can do to spruce up a piece of furniture and this project from kristen davis at kfd designs is a great example. inspired by a dwell studio pillow, kristen updated this swivel chair with a coat of paint and cheerful bird design. i love the yellow color and the playful spin on such a classic chair. thanks for sharing, kristen!

also, i missed this email last week and it’s already made the blog rounds but it was too lovely not too share: a gorgeous kitchen makeover from neryl walker. wow.

oh my, that color and bird decal on the chair are adorable, and im sooo glad the new kitchen has great wood flooring, so much better than linoleum tile!!
Gorgeous chair…everything about it is perfect!! Love the kitchen! The flooring is just plain beautiful and I love the combination of cupboards. They fit so wonderfully together.
Wow–great work with the kitchen! Goes to show that anything is possible.
Cute chair too!
What was wrong with the wood panelling before? I liked it….
the new floor looks great though.
They’re both fantastic! I love the chair though…I’m a sucker for anything with birds on it :)
Beautiful job on the chair Kristen. How did you put the yellow paint on so smoothly?
Oh my, those cabinets make me swoon.
that’s funny. i looked at the first before picture of the kitchen and thought -wow, that looks great! Maybe if she’d just removed the top closed cabinets. The after feels… sparse, in a something’s missing kind of way.
I’m really loving those floors! Are they recycled wood? Laminent? Hardwood? I’m re-doing my kitchen this summer and I’d LOVE to know what created this look. The look of this floor in my house would be my dream!
I love the floors in the new kitchen! wide wood planks rock!
I agree with emilykirstin, all I can see is the loss of the storage space! (I’m kind of a kitchen pack rat that comes from a long line of kitchen pack rats.)
I would love to know where they got the knobs on the wooden kitchen cabinets!!
Does anyone respond to these posts?

yep- we try to alert everyone who submitted before & afters that they have questions waiting for them :)

i am in LOVE with that bird chair. that is exactly my kind of chair. and the white cupboards with the new wood floors in the kitchen is so unobtrusive and pretty!
All I can say is people who liked the before kitchen have probably never renovated a 1970s kitchen! The before might look decent in the photo, but I would bet anything that it was really on its last legs. And even if the cabinets are smaller in the after, if they are well designed, the will be much more efficient.
Anyway, I love the kitchen! Gorgeous!
thanks for the love for the chair, guys! i wanted to keep it and not give it back to my client :)
i just applied paint with a regular purdy angled brush, and made sure my paint didn’t get too gloppy by regularly adding water to the mix. gives it that hand-done look without being to stroke-ey (do you like my terminology? haha). i also used a sponge furniture roller in some places.
Love the chair transformation! So unexpected. Nice to see something really unusual on a chair that we tend to take for granted.
beautiful new kitchen i love the pulls on the wood cabinets and the barstool is fabulous!
Wow. That chair is all kinds of awesome.
what beautiful details on both the chair and kitchen. Just lovely.
Thx for the response! Unfortunately the 70′s laminate was old and peeling, the benches were shallow and overhead cabinets low =bad kitchen design. We actually won this kitchen, (yes won!), but we did have a say in the design. Splashbacks are yet to be installed, and this photo was taken right after completion so it does looks a little un lived in (that has since changed!).
The floors are baltic pine with a 50% teak stain, one coat poly, 3 coats water based. The knobs are vintage. Hope that helps!
Gorgeous chair! Great colors…
The kitchen is a big improvement!
FANTASTIC kitchen!! the flooring is beautiful, and the remodel opened it up so much – what a huge improvement!
wow, that was a awesome transformation from bad 80′s to contemporary!!!! impressed
I really love the chair!
the color of the chair is great, and I love the barn wood plank floors
The kitchen looks very “danish” to me. I’d love it – it would make me get rid of a bunch of my “junk” :-) The chair is cute cute cute too!
lovely kitchen! i adore the transformation — and yes, the wood flooring is waaay better than the linoleum! :-)
Your kitchen is beautful!! I especially love the black countertops! Can you let me know where to find those?
Thx again, the bench tops are actually laminate.
gorgeous kitchen–so much more light! really perfect for cooking.
Such a cute chair!
I like her color selections and the contrast between the sleek cabinets and rustic floors but, as noted by others, she gave up a ton of storage. I’m hoping she’ll post pics after the splash is installed, and hoping the splash is glass!
beautiful!
i love artsy stuff
