stephen orr + johanna burke
this morning i’m living in a trifecta of small world-ness. first i heard from stephen orr, who used to work with me at the house & garden and domino, then i checked out his site and fell in love with these gorgeous paper florals that his friend johanna burke created (doesn’t she sort of look like drew barrymore in that picture? so cute). then i realized that johanna was married to matt dilling from lite brite neon, who was one of the first artists i ever covered, and used to work a few blocks down from me. sometimes nyc can feel so big it’s overwhelming, but then other times it feels like we’re all in the same high school cafeteria waving across tables to friends. anyway, this installation that johanna created for luxury dept. store in korea is calling my name this morning. oh to live in that window and be surrounded by venus fly traps made of carefully folded paper. click here to read more of stephen’s beautiful blog.
She does look like Drew Barrymore! Just found your blog and am in love! Such an inspiring place!
ok i’m not crazy! i couldn’t find a picture of drew to link to that matched this, but i swear i remember a pic of drew in heidi-style braids like this and i was like “they’re twins!”
this is amazing!
Very clever work!! i would like to see in person.
Really inventive and beautiful stuff! …..and Johanna does look a bit like Drew Barrymore.
So cool.. flowers that don’t wither away! Those must take forever to make!!
I would love to know how the paper jungle is attached to the wall. What a great idea and camo for a problem wall..
I love the golden brown color and emphasis on shape. Reminds me a bit of Jane Sassaman’s abstracted plant shapes.
wow. Absolutely love every bit of this! The attention to detail is stunning.
oh my wow! incredible! I just started working with paper leaves and this has blown my mind! xo
Amazingly lovely and intricate work…
Mindblowing! Thanks so much for sharing.
Unbelievably beautiful, Grace! God, I love paper! This is so magical looking and makes me think of “Where The Wild Things Are”…in heels. ;)
absolutely gorgeous! i worked with stephen at domino too and he had such a sweet, calm presence. :) do you know which dept. store in korea? i’m going at the end of april and would love to check it out in person (though i doubt it’ll still be up then, huh?)!
very pretty.
my first love is paper, so these sculptures blow my mind. they are so amazing. i was lucky enough to take a neon signmaking class with matt in brooklyn and it was one of the best classes i’ve ever taken. i’m not surprised that he’s married to someone equally incredible and creative.
Thanks for the nice compliment Jenny! Do you want me to send your $20 by ck or money order?
So glad that you liked Johanna’s work! I think it is going to be in the store for a while. I will find out the details and let you know…

Love her work.I once curated a show in my new York showroom of Amelie Dillman cardboard theatres. I have always admired paper sculptures. Can her work be seen in New York? I would be very interested…
