sometimes art and design is just about what makes your heart sing. and for me, these three pieces of art make my heart not just sing, but feel like it can dance. the first is something that came in my mailbox yesterday: the nyu school of continuing studies’ bulletin. the bulletin has a history of working with incredible artists on their covers and this year’s cover is no exception. i scoured every inch of the bulletin looking for an artist’s name but couldn’t find one- so if you know who this is (rob ryan maybe?) please leave a comment and i’ll amend this asap. this cover, which was created by artist andrea dezsö, is such a lovely take on the classic washington square park scene and is certainly a fresh take on a school bulletin.

second are sara jensen‘s sweet bookplates designed for her son henry (one of them even reminds me of work like rob ryan’s above). i always wish i was able to do something like this on my own for my children one day, and i’m so happy that there are little ones like henry that will get to enjoy beautiful handmade gifts made by parents like sara. click here for more images. (and click here for a sneak peek inside sara’s lovely home)
third is spike jonze’s trailer for ‘where the wild things are’. i’m not sure if it’s the instrumental version of the arcade fire song (and how perfectly the lyrics fit the story), or the sheer flood of memories that come from remembering maurice sendak’s classic book, but this trailer made me smile, laugh, and tear up over and over again. it’s worth watching (even with the sound off at work) a few times. i can’t wait to line up to see this one in the theaters.
last but not least, if you’re looking for more beautiful design to make your heart sing, click here to check out marichelle‘s final posts on the d*s guest blog. it’s been such an honor to have her heart-felt posts on the site.

i wonder what it must be like to be Henry and have your mother illustrate such beautiful things just for you. Great trailer! I wonder if the movie will be as good!
oh, what a great friday morning post! the papercuts are great and the trailer gave me chills and made me cry! i want a wild thing suit!!!
doesn’t that trailer give you the chills? that silhouette of the little boy running in his suit with his crown and scepter make me tear up. i remember wanting to be him so badly when i was little.
I got a little teary eyed over that trailer. Made my heart hurt.
I think Sigur Ros should have done the music
So I’m not the only one who tears up while watching movie trailers. I bet I’ll be watching this one without the husband.
How amazing does this film look!?!? It’s like my childhood dreams come to life! I love that they play Arcade Fire in the trailer as well! Can’t wait for this!
Oh how exciting! I love that they are making this into a movie, my dreams come true. Too bad we have to wait until October to see it!
this trailer really brought a strange mixed bag of emotion for me when i saw it… total excitement with a touch of nostalgic sadness, but in a good way. And how about those hand-drawn title cards? so fun!
I received that same postcard from NYU in the mail, and I reacted the same way (flipping it over searching for an artist’s name). How funny that it is not on there. Such a beautiful illustration deserves some credit!
i know! i thought for sure i could find it somewhere. i went through rob ryan’s blog and googled the heck out of it and couldn’t find anything. i hope they add it online somewhere…
what a great trailer. I can’t wait to see it. I showed it to my kids and they want to see it too.
Aww, I have a little Henry of my own. I can’t wait to take him to see that!
cannot wait to see that movie! definitely teared up! i always thought max was my brother when we were little.
I’m glad I caught this, I really enjoyed seeing this trailer. Brought back many images in my memories that the book had left with me. . . I’ll be bringing my son Kyle to see this movie, he loves animals and will definetely love these guys.
This is the artist for the NYU brochure: http://a.parsons.edu/~dezsoa/BOOKS_shadow10.html
It’s funny because I came across her site earlier this week and bookmarked it, and then got the brochure in the mail yesterday. Her work is pretty amazing.
thanks caitlin!!

To me, the top piece looks like a paper cutting by Beatrice Coron (http://www.beatricecoron.com/paper.html). Recently, she did the book cover for the current course catalog of Penland School of Crafts, near Asheville, NC, where she’ll be teaching a class this summer (http://penland.org/classes/summer/summer_books_paper.html).
If it’s her not her work, you should consider featuring her. Her work is truly amazing and delightful.
I loved it, i’m a teacher in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and i read the book several times a year to 4-6 year olds. Oh, how they would love the movie! (In Holland the book is called Max and the Maximonsters)
this makes my whole day!! Thank you for the post. I cannot wait to see this movie!
Thank you for writing about my artwork for the NYU summer bulletin.
Would you believe that my prom theme was Where the Wild Things Are? We were too cool for school.
I am a huge fan to Rob Ryan’s works. I know he’s going to have a show in New York in early April. You have to go see it if you’re in town! It will be as magical as watching that trailer.
^ — coolest prom theme ever. I am so excited to see that! Those book plates are totally adorable too!
wow! I just totally teared up and smiled a bunch too. the movie opens on my husband’s birthday – I wonder if he’ll let me make it a reason to go to the opening ;)
My entire team gathered around one computer to watch. I got so excited I almost cried. I think we’re gonna go as a team for some team bonding. Looks like an amazing film.
I love rob ryans work, it is so beautifully cut and it has so much story to it, if you haven’t already you should read his book ‘this is for you’ it is entirley made of paper cut images.
I have just done an entire university project on where the wild things are. We had to come up with our own illustrations for it, i was so difficult seen as the originals are so amazing. I can’t wait for the film.
I actually teared up when I saw that preview today :) I will be at the theater the day that movie comes out!!
thank you for putting this clip up…as the other 30 have all said, memories from sitting like an indian on the rug in kindergarten having this story read to, couldn’t help but bring tears…thanks
I love Arcade Fire. I have not heard the instrumental version before today. It is lovely. Thanks for introducing me to it.
I wasnt expecting that – but I have had tears streaming! I think it is the total combintion of the lyrics and the visuals and memeories of my own childhood….think I will be reading this book to my boys tonight!
can i just say i am so relieved that they didn’t go the CGI route with this movie. while i can appreciate some CGI in films, in most cases its so overdone that it just takes you out of the moment. i was worried about that when i heard they were adapting this book to film and i am so happy to see people-in-monster-suits method!!! yay! btw HUGE arcade fire fan so MAD PROPS for that!
How did I not ever see this post before! ?
