I’m a huge fan of Katy Smail, I love her illustrated heroines and just recently discovered her photography – you can certainly see a strong resemblance between the two. Here’s a peek at some of her new work (Anna is my personal favorite).
I had the opportunity to ask Katy a few questions…
1. Where do get your inspiration from?
At the moment: Nabokov, great love stories, wistful girls in petticoats and furs, Charles Anastase, Victorian botanical illustrations, Lula magazine, woodland animals, The Belles of the Black Diamond Field, tragic heroines, Yelena Yemchuk, lonliness and longing, Rodarte, Egon Schiele, sequins, Tim Walker, dusty books, Henry Darger, Erdem, old English houses, paper dolls……..
2. Please share 6 random things about
you.
+ I have a fashion magazine addiction problem
+ I run on caffeine and sugar
+ I often feel like I should be living in the 1920s instead
+ Foxes are my favorite animals. Followed closely by red pandas…
+ New York is my favorite place in the world
+ I always wear ribbons and bows in my hair…
3. What was it that made you want to start creating? Did something specific trigger it?
4. What are you currently up to?
I just finished an illustrated fashion spread for la2day.com (for whom I also write). I’m currently making work for a couple of upcoming exhibitions in London and New York.
5. Artists, designers, bloggers who often work from home alone (all day long) develop some pretty unique and quirky habits. Can you share one of yours
I drink a lot of tea & coffee….apart from the caffeine addiction, I find the distraction of disappearing into the kitchen for five minutes of procrastination endlessly appealing. Along similar lines, I spend hours reading fashion blogs and magazines online…I also go running. If I didn’t have that half an hour out of the house on days when I’m working from home I’d actually go insane….
6. Name a few songs from your current playlist:
Bob Dylan – the love of my life
Billie Holliday – for late nights with my paper girls only Billie will do
And at the moment – Beirut & Alela Diane
