last week west elm celebrated the opening of its newest manhattan shop by hosting a fantastic silent auction of one-of-a-kind furniture and objects created by david stark using recycled west elm packing materials. all of the proceeds went to the cooper hewitt and at the end of the night, david’s work was able to raise $8,000 for the museum!

i’m always amazed by david’s incredible designs, but i was especially excited to see him design pieces using something there’s always an abundance off- packing materials. i’m partial to the gorgeous cardboard cacti, but there is also a giant lamp, tiny clocks, vases, a chair and much more. click here for more information on david’s work, here for david’s diy video on d*s and here for a tour of david’s colorful and beautiful brooklyn home. thanks, casey!

WOW..
This is amazing. What talent.
Wow! That is amazing!
i heart the cardboard cactus. it would serve me well, considering i eventually end up killing every plant i own! fantastic!
I LOVE the vases! Those are beautiful!
I love the cuckoo clocks.
David Stark never ceases to amaze me! I’m such a huge fan.
These pieces are AMAZING! Reminds me of my 3D art class in college when everyone had to create a piece of large furniture using only cardboard… Needless to say, David Stark would have received an A+
Impressive work!
I adore the cacti!
Fantastic reuse!
Like the work . . .
The clock reminds me of Tom Sachs work.
Very cool. We don’t have West Elm in Seattle so I’ll have to check out when I’m in NYC in may.
the giant lamp in the front window is awesome!
madness David Stark, sheer madness.
I want to be buried in a recycled cardboard saguaro shaped coffin filled with shredded paper.
Good! …simply because they use an ABSURD amount of packaging for their products. You can buy a computer with less packaging than a garbage can at West Elm.
Awesome post. I love all of them, especially the giant cacti. What a cool way to recycle.
I love his work! Absolutely awesome.
Is it really recycled cardboard?
nelly- yep, it’s really recycled cardboard
The detritus of factory home furnishings production hand-fashioned into impermanent one-off home furnishings. Idea for project: establish residence in West Elm box.
