these cheerful before & afters come from rachel at heart of light. i love the way she’s used paint to bring new life to simple, thrift-store finds: a worn-out mirror and set of ordinary salt and pepper shakers. inspired by another reader’s before & after on d*s, rachel decided to create a message center with her inexpensive frame by painting it a sunshine yellow and adding a chalkboard. voila! instant usability! rachel’s shakers were inspired by a pepper mill from anthropologie and i think they mimic the more expensive look nicely. well-applied paint always gives things such a nice face lift. thanks for sharing, rachel!

Wow, that frame project is too cute! Congratulations!
Wow, the shakers are fabulous!
Yea! I love these shakers. They actually inspired me to go thrifting that same weekend. The aqua color was the perfect color choice.
I recently discovered the joys of using spray paint for small projects like this, and I honestly don’t know how I lived without it for so long.
Gosh, those shakers are cute. Nice job, Rachel!
Yippee! Recognition at last – I can’t tell you how much I love Rachel’s blog – she is seriously talented.

love the frame, and i’ve been wanting shakers–i love those more than anything i’ve seen!
I have those same shakers! So, did you sand them or just tape and spray away?
Bravo! Now I want to spray all the boring browns in my house bright cheerful colors.
Happy notes, happy spices! Nicely done.
She is really creative and I love that she chose bold and bright colors.

My Mom has those same s&p shakers. I wonder if she would notice if they were missing? Great projects!

I NEED that color now too! What a brilliant idea!
Would D*S recommend any particular brand of spray paint? I’m not familiar with any :(
Like the shakers, but how many chalkboards can be posted on this site!
it’s a cute idea for the first few times, but i feel like i see it every other week on this site. No offense to the very pretty job this person did, but it’s just the number of chalkboards!
found the paint info in Rachel’s blog. Duh!
This is an awesome example of how to refresh older pieces. I like how simple the changes were—simple but so effective!
Awe man! I just spent like $20 or something at Anthropologie for like the exact same Pepper grinders!
You tricky DIY’er, well done!
Also, Yeah! Chalkboards.
Love the Chalkboard frame. I’m doing something just like that. I’ll be hanging it in the office.
