i’m always impressed when anyone takes on their own upholstery project- not only is it a little intimidating to me, but i admire anyone who has the patience to take on more difficult chair and sofa shapes. this diy upholstery project comes from d*s reader sarah- and it’s her first attempt at upholstery. she used braemore “shadow branches” fabric and did a pretty knock-out job updated that sad orange chair. click here to view more of her upholstery process from start to finish. thanks, sarah!

Great chair! my only comment is that it would look even ‘fresher’ painted white! the white would look great with that fabric!
looks great! I am impressed that this is her first attempt, gives me hope.
Ooooh… I think the wooden parts of the chair would look great in white, or a lighter wood tone, but the effect is still really fresh with this darker wood tone. Great job!
super impressive, especially for the first try! I actually think painting the wood white would have been too much. love it!
Incredible! I just wish I could do somethign like that :)
funny, I was thinking WHITE wood right away, but then after reading a PP ‘too much’ comment, I found myself thinking, what if the wood were the same green as the fabric? Probably also too much, but fun to think about.
I like the ‘in process’ picture, it makes this chair post much better.
i’m in awe that this is her first attempt. good job! love that fabric.
Beautiful! I love the fabric choice.
Ok, I am going to finally try this this summer. Amazing
wow that chair looks amazing! i love the green and white fabric. where is it from?
awesome.
i love this site, love your work
i taked soo many ideas from here
thank you !!!!
Holy moly! Tres impressive for a first attempt! Love the buttons and nailheads. I think leaving the wood as is was a smart choice. It will keep it more timeless.
fabric is wrong for the chair – if you are going to leave the wood unpainted, a softer color would have worked better.
I love it! The green and white fabric is fantastic.
first attempt?? liar!
really great job! :)
I love the green and white fabric! I have a chair that my grandfather built, and the fabric is worn and pretty masculine. I would love to try this- but I’m so scared I would do a horrible job!
Great fabric choice!
fantastic, it just pops while still looking classic.
Cute
Centered that pattern like a pro!
Meeeooowww…that is gorgeous! I have a very similar chair I’ve been putting off because it needs the padding redone as well, but seeing this gives me hope. ;)
P.S. Ignore that ‘fabric is wrong for the chair’ comment. You do beautiful work.
Thank you SO much for posting my chair!!! It’s fun to hear that I’ve inspired a few people — since d*s is what inspired me in the first place :)
with a little patience, i really think anyone can do upholstery!
and as for the wood — haha, i love it the way it is :) but i’m a bit of a wood snob…… (it’s not as dark as the photos make it look).
wow! i love it!
Sarah,
I think this is the best example I’ve seen yet of updating a chair or piece of furniture. I love the fact that you left the wood in it’s natural state and therefore showing off it’s true unique characteristics. Painting the wood white is child’s play and would only have told me how little you knew or appreciated wood pieces, like some of the people commenting on your item. You did a great job. We loose so many old pieces to people who just don’t know and/or don’t care.
Thanks for sharing.
i love the final product. i think the fabric choice and wood color are perfect!
Sarah, what a great piece of work… the fabric print is very fresh…. just checked your blog and was thrilled with the photo journaling of the process. Thank you so much for sharing!
Sarah,
Did you use any instructions (books, websites) to guide you? I’m planning a similar project and am wary of taking everything apart only to learn I don’t know what to do next. Thanks!
Jill
Great job! I agree though with painting the wood white or a lighter wood tone and it would be even better!
OMG, I found my twin, you are awesome. Im always repairing stuff but just have done a little upholstery, now you made me believe in myself and try it. Thanks!
Looks great! I have to admit I would like to see the wood a lighter color.
That is so awesome! I’ve never recovered a chair before, but this has inspired me to do it.
this looks great! i am impressed that she took this project on!
