this before & after comes from guy merrill of man make home. guy bought two affordable ladder back chairs on ebay and they promptly became everyday seating for the builders who renovated guy’s home. after being covered in cement dust and exposed to the elements, guy decided it was time for an upgrade. a little sand paper, farrow and ball paint in ‘railings‘, and some lovely william morris fabric from liberty of london (oh, how i love their fabric) and voila! a beautiful new chair. [thanks to guy for sharing!]

i think the more subtle pattern or even a cloth without patterns at all would look better. the form of the chair has elegance, which combined with this particular material is lost.
I do not like the matte finish of the black paint nor the pattern combined with the black. Just does nothing for me.
Mmm, I like the matte finish! Also, what can you tell me about those floors? Slate? Or Tile?
This is lovely. The paint looks like more of a very dark teal – that, with the modern lines of the chair and the stylized flower pattern are a bit Arts & Crafts without being too ornate or heavy, which I personally find that style can be.
really like the lines of the chair and I like the re-do
I agree – it’s pretty lame and feel like it could have been more of a standout piece…
great color for the wood – but I like the wood of the before better. I really like the way the pattern is fitted to the seat – the front right corner has the large blue flower curving around the edge and I like the upper right corner as well with the double stacked flowers. However, the pattern is not something I like. What I truly love about this chair is that even though the color/pattern/style are not what I like and I like the before picture better, it is a well executed and inspired refinishing job. Congratulations Guy and great flooring choice too.
Lame? Seriously, are we looking at the same chair?
I think the matte finished is such a sophisticated spin on all the annoying glossy white we’ve been seeing on this site.

Beautiful! I love the painted wood, especially.
I really like the matte paint on the chair, and I definitely like the after better than the before. I am wondering if the fabric he chose matches the room they belong in? Sometimes I think a pattern is not the right choice until I see it in the space it was intended for. Personally I would have chosen an offbeat color for the chair with a funky fabric for the seat, but that is what would look great in my space!! Good job Guy!!
Lame? My god, the comments on Design*Sponge are starting to remind me of all the snarky art critiques I had back in college. It’s a lovely chair. Hooray for creativity! To each his own.
I love the bluish/slate color of the new chair–how inspiring! I cannot wait to do my own DIY :-)
yes please people – no more comments in the comments section. Its starting sound like people have differing opinions about the posts on here instead of a bunch of mooing.
Snark–
You have a point, but there’s a difference between snarkyness and healthy disagreement. I hope this comment section doesn’t become a case of “mean for the sake of being mean”.

I’m with Snark on this. If people are going to be offended by negative feedback, they shouldn’t put themselves out there by posting on a design blog. It’s feedback, both positive and negative, that drives us to push our ideas to the next level. As for my views on the chair: the paint is ok, the fabric is too busy and to me looks like it’s upside down.
Funny, the fabric looks upside down to me too. I really like the re-do though.
Love the chair!!! It is so inspiring to me. I love things like that. Love your stuff and what you do!
Wow! What an improvement on the chair. I love it!
It might be the minimalist in me speaking here, but what made this ‘before’ so striking was its utter simplicity. Regardless, as long as Guy loves the chairs, then his makeover is a success…!
great lines! i like it :)
I have to say, I feel sad to see that pretty wood painted.
A lot of these furniture makeovers tend to hide or replace everything that was original or charming about the piece in the first place and make them look like something you could pick up at Ikea. Embrace your vintage, don’t cover it up completely!
