on monday we got a sneak preview of thomas paul’s plates for the ny gift fair this weekend. and today we’re getting a special peek at his new line of pillows and totes. made of jute fiber, this series has a nautical theme that i’m really loving- it’s a nice change from all the birds. click here for more of thomas’ work or visit his new work at the gift fair, booths 3954 and 3956 (keena co.).

The sperm whale is definitely emerging as a trend…which works for me because I love sea creatures.
Oh I like these! Very nautical, but they also have a naturalistic quality I like. They’d look great at a beach/bayhouse.
I love the sperm whale! How cute.
Speaking from a New England perspective… These seem kinda stodgy to me. Like something my grandmother might buy at a craft fair in Nantucket. Perhaps I just have a very stylish grandmother.
I wish thomaspaul would bring back the bright colorful abstract geometric designs that the brand became so well know for. This new direction is way beyond stodgy. I hate to say it but these are just plain bad.

oh for a sperm whale pillow! Can I buy it now?!
Wow, this is such a COMPLETE departure for him! I really like it, but it doesn’t seem like the work of the same designer who was doing graphic, bright, sleek designs just last season.
I love these and perfect for new england house by the sea!
I’m getting tired of the ye olde and the rustic cabin styles -the trend feels very over. Bring back the modern!
Ho Hum, more Dover clip art.
Do you know when they will be available?

normally gift fair debuts are available within a month or two of their showing. i’ll let you know when i hear anything.
ps: are you a w&m student? i caught the end of your email address and had visions of my time spent at matoaka studio… ;)
thomas paul! my heart flutters for your pillows. :)
I covet the nautical pillows, perfect for my home. I hope they are on sale soon. Please let us know if you can.
Actually I’m a professor at W&M. I read your blog everyday–at least twice a day.
Yuck
A departure that is way too PATCH NYC for my tastes. Patch does a great line of just bags with images from Don Carney’s paintings on them. This is the low rent clipart knock off version — seek the original.
I second the Patch Nyc rip-off coment.
These pillows are sooooo PATCH NYC! Even down to the black trim around the edges. I know they’ve been doing this style pillow for awhile. I’m surprised someone like Thomas Paul couldn’t come up with his own concept. Such a disappointment.
Why is everyone assuming that these are copied or inspired by Patch? Are they the only company to ever use burlap or jute, or to do sea inspired motifs? I think people should not assume that because something looks similar that it was directly inspired by. If you look at the TP collection from last season, you will see that this is a natural progression and is where the line is going in terms of design.
