i was excited to hear from photographer amy hoff this week. inspired by your before & afters, she and her husband decided to give their daughter’s room a real face-lift. they found a photo of a headboard they loved online, but didn’t love the $3,000 price tag. so after picking up a king-sized headboard on craigslist for $40, amy’s husband cut it down to fit their daughter’s full-sized bed and then cut a piece of wood to mimic the lines of the headboard they loved online. after some painting, a new bedding set from jcpenny ($150) and a little elbow grease they had a brand new room that looks worlds beyond the original. my hat is off to any parents that put that much time into their children’s rooms. i always appreciated my parents letting me decorate my room when i was younger and it’s great to see amy and her husband creating such a unique space for their daughter.

Fantastic! It’s a smart and stylish statement that has a lot of personality. Bravo, Amy!
Holy moly! The makeover on that headboard is amazing. Talk about vision! I’ll bet their daughter is BEYOND thrilled. I love when people do stuff for their kids that is fancy and adult-ish without being super expensive.
oh my goodness! That is fab! Her husband is quite handy. I love the lines of the headboard too! Oh, if I had this room as a teenager! xo
oh! my daughter would LOVE this! its really “cool”
WOW – this is amazing. _I_ would love this! Great job
wow! i’m impressed by the headboard. i never would have saw such potential.
This room is really great and I love that the colors are so atypical of a kid’s room. In fact, I think if I’d be sorely tempted if I were Amy to keep this room for myself!
sweet lord! lucky daughter.
I love the new room. I especially love what they did with the headboard.
Beautiful! I hope your daughter thoroughly enjoys it.
WOWZA!
Wow. Can she redo MY room?
WOW!!!!
I’m starting to think that “before” pic is a total fake. I can’t believe that someone who can turn out the “After” would ever let their kid sleep in that drab and prison-like “Before”. Maybe it was “before” they bought the house even.
Coral and black is such an unusual but stunning combination…!
That headboard is divine.
Love reading d*s before and after posts. This is a great one. Thanks for sharing!
the transformation of the headboard is divine. tres chic! …and i would have to agree with pagalina about the before shot…
Thank you for all your awesome comments on my daughters room redo! We actually just purchased this home and the before shot was taken the day of close.
Wow! That is a great before and after! I love that they spent so much time and thought creating a space for their daughter. What a way to show love and teach creativity!
I would love to have that room for myself
Superb job….Amy…wish i had all your talent…and Bryan also…love it, love it, love it…..
Um. Wow. This is amazing! The scary blue carpeting. What a transformation!
If that husband isn’t doing that for a living, he’s missed his calling.
fantastic work! i love the headboard and the lamp. really cool
that is incredible! i would have loved to have a room like that when i was younger!
wow, I love this! What a great way to spruce up what would be such a garrish headboard!
Wow. Now this is a remake!! What a makeover. Very stylishhh…
I can’t add to all the great kudos, except that the photo of Jame Dean is the cherry on top and a testimony of great taste.
What a great room! I must admit, I was totally taken aback by how much it actually resembles the in-house bar at the agency I work at. Check it out:

wow, wow, and wow!!
Holey Smokes! What a transformation! What vision!
I love that room. No way I could convince my super modernist hubby to go for it though!
Our apartment is on the verge of getting re-done though nothing quite as swanky as this.
eek – URL is wrong!!! in my previous comment. corrected with this one.
How come the shape of the before headboard doesn’t match the after?
Hi Julie, You may have missed this in the write up but the headboard was a king and it was cut down to a full by my husband:) In order to get smaller some of the orginal shape had to go. I will say that I like the end shape better:) The headboard creation credit goes 100% to my husband as I could have never done it on my own:)
That looks so good. I especially love the headboard- what a beauty!
Father’s who redo their daughters bedrooms!?Agencies with in-house bars!?
I’m either living on the wrong planet, or I’m behind in my drinking.
Julie, the headboard was cut down to fit her bed – I think Dad and Mum just cleverly sliced out a bit.
julie – I think that’s explained in the description. They used a headboard for inspiration, then cut a new one to a similar shape and added moulding.
I have to say, I much prefer the DIY version to the $3,000 one!!
So swanky… for a teenage girl, I presume?!? Although it would be fit for a grown woman as well… so great!
totally impressive! diggin the color scheme…
I love the idea of cutting down a headboard to size!
OMG, that is stunning! really cool transformation!
this looks so classy and sheik now!
great job.
Crazy, I can’t believe that is the same headboard. It looks amazing!!! One of the best before/afters ever.
Holy moly. That is one swank room. Kind of hippie-ish but in a very chic way.
wow, it looks great!!!
and pagalina, have you ever thought that maybe it just wasn’t in the budget (or time frame) to make the room over before? i highly doubt it’s a fake.
WOW. I would have loved to have a room like this as a teenager. Actually I’d take this room over mine, now.
I have a couple questions.
Is the before pic the headboard from craigslist or the the $3,000 inspiration headboard?
What exactly did your husband do? I know he cut it down to fit the bed, but did he glue two pieces of the headboard together. Or he actually created the end piece?
Is the white part of the headboard upholstered in fabric? Or just painted white wood?
What craigslist board did you find this on? I want a headboard just like it.
Great job!
Hi CB,
?) Is the before pic the headboard from craigslist or the the $3,000 inspiration headboard?
Answer) The before one is the one we got on craigslist. I will be happy to e-mail you a pic of the $3,000 one if you like.
?) What exactly did your husband do? I know he cut it down to fit the bed, but did he glue two pieces of the headboard together. Or he actually created the end piece?
Answer) I am going to try to answer this as best as I can…he did it not me so it’s hard. He said that it was very hard to cut it down cuz he had to do it by hand. Basically he took out a slice just like a poster said. Then he mathced it up used glue and wood puddy. I think he used a drimal to match up some details. Then He spray painted the body gloss black and he reused the orginal foam and wood insert just cut it to fit the new size hole. Then he covered it in white vinyl. Then he added wood to the back as support just like a sprip or 2. Also he set it up to work with a queen or a full by leaveing it wider then adding some inner wood for the full frame. When we got it into her room she wanted it taller so he added to the legs about 4 inches.
?) What craigslist board did you find this on? I want a headboard just like it.
Answer) After looking everywhere for a headboard and I mean everywhere….hours and hours. I posted on the Lincoln Nebraska craigslist under furniture some pictures of headboards we liked and said I was looking for something in that family but the headboard only needed to have good bones. After what seemed like weeks I gave up and to my surprise I got this e-mail……..
Hi There,
I sent you an e-mail from another address, and I wanted to make sure you received it. I have a King bedframe that looks almost exactly like your picture. It was my grandparents’.
Please call or e-mail me either way! I need to get rid of it to make space in my home, and I would rather it go to someone like you who would appreciate it.
Craig won’t let me include the pictures, but I’d be happy to send them to you another way…
- Andy
So I guess I learned don’t ever be afraid to put out there what you are looking for some one might reply:)
When my daughter saw the headboard she said I might be out there maybe on this one??? and my husband said it was really kinda gody…..but they both beared with my vision which came from all who post on design sponge before and after….If it wasn’t for this blog I would have never gave this thing a whirl!
What a transformation. I love the color on the walls.
very inspired/inspiring!
can we please get a description or a close up of the beaded light fixture?
this is gorgeous! i’ve been looking for a similar headboard on craigslist that i can makeover like this but haven’t had any luck yet – these will give me motivation to keep looking. wow. wow. wow.
now i’ll go back and read the post…got a bit ahead of myself…
Question) can we please get a description or a close up of the beaded light fixture?
The beaded light fixture is kinda of a crazy thing. My daughter had this years ago it came from walmart. It just has a round cicle thing and the beads hang from it and it had a light bulb in it. I mean cheap like $30.00 or something from walmart.
All my husband did is take down her ceiling fan but leave the base of it up and then stuck this old beaded thing on it but he took the bulb thing off it and used the bulb thing that is part of the ceiling fan.
Honeslty we wanted to spend some real cash on a light but this was free and worked fine but at some point and time we want to replace it.
Drop me an e-mail and I will be happy to send you a pic of it:)
STUNNING
Amy, that was so awesome, and I am so proud of your “vision”! Now we see why you are such a good photographer – vision to see what others can’t, but what could be. It’s a god given talent!
What color did you use on the wall?
Gumball red we purchased it at menards it was just cheapy paint. Actually the guy that worked in the paint department suggested the color.
Great! Nice taking some time to do a great job like this! It’s far more than going to a store and just bying, there’s all the work and dedication in it! And all the details have been though … colour schemes… just great! Congrats!
ace!
nice.
really like the window panels.
That room is SICK! Awesome job! Wow!
This is a stunning improvement to the room. What vision, creativity and energy. Your daughter is a lucky kid!
hello!
i honestly think it looks tERRIBLE!! it looks like a gothic room …
best regards
I’ve been looking for the black hanging lamp, where did you find it?
The black hanging light came from walmart but it was purchased years ago.
The curtian is a shower curtian close out from JC Penny’s. It was a Chris Madden Demask. $10.00
The bedding set is current at jcpenny.com it’s listed under bed in a bag. It runs about $150.00 you get everything you see in the picture.
The cool side table of stacked shapes was a close out at JC Penny of this years fall back to school line. Ran $20.00 it was the display.
JC Penny’s, Target, Kolhs and Walmart get some really cool things in late summer and fall for back to school teen and young adult rooms.
The poster of James Deam came rom Avent cards. $15.00
The Elvis lamp was a closet out at home depote….last year. $10.00
The peace sign hand came from TJ Max I thinki it was around $15.00
The demask hanging holds photos and it came rom Hobby Lobby on sale it was about $10.00
The tall shelf on the right of the window was a yard sale find for $5.00 and the white tv on the stand was a yeard sale find for $3.00.
Opps type 0 the tall shelf on the left of the window:) LOL..okay I am not awake yet:)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? This room isn’t goth at all! At least i dont feel like james dean and some classic rockers are goth. Marilyn manson and Tool are goth to me.
But anyways, your room owns!
Good work.
Amy, the room is unbelievable! Its such an amazing transformation. It totally fits your daughter. Wow! :)
Love, love, love this. The orange wall + the vintage B&W + that headboard! Amy, you need to get that husband of yours to design more beds and make sure to put my order at the top of the list.
Hi CB,
I’m sorry to email so late, but was curious if it’s possible to get that origional headboard emailed to me? Long story short, I have a client who is looking for that EXACT headboard (it was used in an editorial shoot) and we have been looking for months. (hoping the craigslist add has some details about it)
Thank you in advance for your help!
