before and after: piper’s chair

piper of steakandcakes sent in this great chair before and after. piper’s mom found two chairs at a sale and decided to strip them down because they were in bad shape. after painting the frames black, piper picked out a fabric by alexander henry (viceroy) and reupholstered the seats and backs. now they have a new life in piper’s home!

SO Cute!!! Love them. And love even more that she’s from Omaha :) My hometown. Someday I’ll convince my husband to move there…

I think I am the odd man out, but I actually like the before, seeing the back exposed [at least for this particular chair] is so pretty…I would have just found a hearty linen or a sanded down denim, hand print and/or screen print a design, and cover the seat >>> & leave as is… :/

It is so great to see what can be accomplished! I must be on the lookout for great “before” pieces.

I agree with roxy, I like the natural tones the original had. I see too many redos painting the wood black, which don’t get me wrong, can work when the rest of your decor is suited to the graphic look it gives. Since the room is painted with warm tones I would have recommended a scheme something like lena corwin’s chair: http://www.lenacorwin.com/images/rotate/home_swap_4.jpg
just an opinion, the work looks well executed, just not keen on the color.

I like the fabric but for a different furniture application.

People stop destroying beautiful old furniture. I am SO DONE with the painting furniture thing.

amy

stunning, just stunning! i agree with nancy about painting old wood, but it looks like in this case the wood was not in the best condition..probably previously painted and stripped, so i think in this case, the black gloss is wonderful! nice!!!

Piper

Thanks for all the interest! I love my chairs! I know some of you like the old wood better – it’s not really my style and Amy was right, this wood was in pretty icky shape (badly stained and stripped!), but I understand completely! And the back is upholstered like the front, just to let you know.

melinda

this is off topic but can you please tell me about the tower / fan wood item next to the chair…What is it? Does it only come out at Christmas? it knocked a memory loose from my early childhood and i’d love to try to find one. I have still the little people that are stacked on the layers…i had forgotten where they came from!
any direction you can give me would be appreciated : )

Piper

@ melinda – the christmas windmill is from the swedish part of my family – but is actually more of a german tradition. just search on google for wooden christmas windmill & you’ll find a lot of them! they’re fantastic – i leave mine out year round.

What style of chair is that? I would love more info on the furniture itself that makes it on the site; there are so many knowledgable folks here….

I agree with roxy, I like the original better. I adore the honesty of the chair and beauty of the exposed structure. I bought the best interior home design book called “Restoration Home”. It has influenced me greatly! check it out!
