sneak peek: ruth shively

our first sneak peek today comes to us from painter ruth shivley. two years ago she moved into their 1964 ranch house in columbia county, ny along with her husband (also an artist) and two children. they used this new home as an opportunity to de-clutter;  walls came down and white paint went up. ultimately a more modern look was achieved, but not without making it their own with old eclectic things and their kids’ artwork. thanks so much for sharing, ruth! you can click here for more, full-sized images of the shively home. (if you’d like to contact ruth about commissions – her primary focus is children’s portraiture – please refer to her website, or email her at ruth@ruthshively.com). stay tuned at 1pm for another fantastic sneak peek! -anne

[Above: our new home to us, invites freedom of movement with it's open space and great light, it's very kid friendly and a great place to have friends over to cook and hang out by the fire. we love it.]

Can someone tell me where that beautiful armless brown chair in the living room can be found? Also — I love, love, love the school supply bar stools! Also the mix-n-match chairs at the round dining room table. Nice.

Stacey

I love all the rooms, the light coming in is so inviting as are the textures throughout the home.

This is my favorite kind of sneak peek– feels like someone really lives and works there! And I’m wondering about that sofa… make and model please?

Kristan

LOVE the light fixture and the centerpiece in the first photo! Also the non-matching chairs are cute. :)

Overall it seems like a very happy space, and I enjoy the unique pieces in each room.

My sister rented a ranch house for a while, and I really came to appreciate the simple, straightforward floor plan. They are so livable.
You have a wonderful sense of style – it’s so fresh, but so personal at the same time. Thanks for sharing it!

Elizabeth

Can anyone tell me where that comfortor comes from? I love the trim and the size of the squares!

Tara

Your house is so warm and inviting. Stylish, too. A great mix of decor and personal touches. This is a home that I would love to come to for a cup of coffee and a chat, you know?

Sue

I want this home!! Everything, from the paintings, the kitchen counter, the textiles –warm, inviting and yes, I too would love to come for coffee with Tara!

Tara

Can someone please, please, please tell me where I can get slip covers for your bertoia chairs? I love the black cover on the little red one in the first pic!

Tara

Katharine – I think I’ve seen that chair in the Room & Board catalog.

Christy

Wow.
I just need to know what kind of wood the kitchen bar is made from.

Ruth! I’ve been looking for that EXACT wallpaper…the natural grass. Where did you get it?

Lauralollers

Absolutely lovely. I really enjoy the mix of styles: a little mid century, some arts and crafts. Very nice. I’d like to ask Ruth where she purchased her chrome lamp in the living room – I like the beveled arm.

ruth shively

the grass wallpaper is ordered from a local wallpaper store. the chrome lamp is from a garage sale in maine!

May I ask, what is the wall color in the dining room?
