before and after: andrea’s outdoor seating

andrea bellamy of heavy petal decided to do some major makeovers in the process of redoing her now-gorgeous urban backyard. inspired by a high-end design but faced with the reality of a second-hand sofa (with good bones), she decided to strip the sofa to its metal frame, refit the frame with cedar slats (i liked this look so much i thought it was the “after” at first), spray painted the frame, and had cushions made to match the clean, modern look of the high-end inspiration piece. her final result is a fantastic piece that makes her backyard the urban patio of anyone’s dreams. click here for more details on andrea’s process and here to see more of her beautiful patio space. thanks to andrea for sharing! (the single chair in the “after” shot is a makeover, too but the process shots aren’t ready yet)

ps: stay tuned for a special mid-week sneak peek next!

“the urban patio of anyone’s dreams”. Yep. It’s mine !

Anyone knows what tiles those are ? they’re beautiful too.

Andrea (Heavy Petal)

Thanks, Grace, for your very kind write-up! I like the plain cedar slats, too – and in the winter that’s what we’ve got out there. We take the cushions in to protect them from the worst of the elements but can still sit out there on sunny days.

Ha! I thought the wooden slats were the after as well… I almost miss them in the last pic, but cushions are always more comfortable.

Kristan

Omigosh, that is truly beautiful. And I’m with Grace: The middle wooden slat step could totally have been an After!

holy moley! I just cursed out loud viewing this! What a transformation! My parents live outside when the weather is nice so I’ve seen my fair share of outdoor furniture!

I’m totally inspired. I just hope that I have the same vision when I see these great finds and don’t look them over! Great job.

Wow – I am blown away by everyone’s comments. *Blush*

Loora – the tiles are 1′x2′ dimensional cut basalt.

My husband had a lot to do with the final result too. (Thanks, honey!)

Randi

Love the finished revamp – and the wooden slats are awesome too. Hmmm… now I have more reason than ever to pick up random wrecks with potential, despite my husband’s belief (which is true) that I don’t get around the recovering anything…

Wow … color me impressed! The slats are really beautiful. I would totally think the new version is actually high-end garden furniture, and thus be very jealous that you could afford it.

Fantastic makeover!!!!

seriously cool… i always love seeing people get creative like this, i even go as far to say that made over furniture (or anything for that matter) usually looks better than designer store bought stuff.

Nice one Andrea!

wow I love this! I love that you can remove the slats in the wet/cold weather and still have the beautiful slats! Thanks for sharing, I love seeing all the before and afters! It encourages me to see old furniture in a new way.

Amazing vision for this piece-BraVo! I have to agree with everyone, best B&A yet.

Andrea, may I ask what was the cost breakdown for your project? I’m going to be on the lookout for something like this and I’m wondering how much I should budget to achieve the transformation.

VR.

It looks like a million bucks. Awesome job!

A couple quesions…how did you prep it before spray painting? I sprayed painted once o find out a few years later that the paint started flaking off. What type of paint did you use.

Andrea at Heavy Petal

Oops – I’m way behind on answering some of these questions.

April – the cost breakdown was something like: $100 for the used lounger and loveseat; $75 for the cedar slats and screws; $10 for Rustoleum spraypaint; $100 for the fabric; $250 to have new cushions custom-sewn (includes the foam).

VR – We used Rustoleum spray paint. We’ve just gone through our third summer with it and it’s still looking great.

Thanks all!
