Souther Salazar

Once upon a time there was a boy named Souther. A SuperCALIfragilisticexpialidocious artist named Souther!!

Let’s just put it this way, when we saw the work for his show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery last year, we just about died and went to some some magical, fairytale place that only Souther could create.

Starting out in the early 90′s photocopying cut & paste microcomics & zines in Oakland, he went on to graduate from Art Center College Of Design in Pasadena and now resides in Echo Park. His work has appeared in galleries from Los Angeles to Portland to Tokyo and in publications such as Kramer Ergot, Swindle, The Drama (http://www.thedrama.org/), Juxtapoz and Giant Robot. His mixed media art is beautifully detailed yet playful and childlike.

When the lights go out in Souther’s studio we imagine all of his little creatures coming to life and wreaking havoc on the joint.

We are HUGE fans of Souther Salazar and his work. If you weren’t familiar with him before we’re sure you’re ready to join the Souther fan club now.

Thanks so much for introducing us to Souther! He has such a playful sense of style in his work…I love it!

I have loved Souther since seeing him in Giant Robot many years ago… I’m so glad you’re spreading the word. I love everything he touches!!! His girlfriend (or she used to be) also has amazing artwork–sometimes they show their work together.

I stood gawking in front of his work for an eternity when it was in the Giant Robot retrospective at the JANM. Does anyone know where to buy his prints?

I saw his work too at the Jonathan Levine Gallery and fell in love. I much rather live in his world than our current situation here in the US.
