I stared collecting blue & white dinnerware many (!) years ago. When I moved to my new home last fall I wanted a fresh look. I put the plates and soup bowls in storage, and bought an inexpensive set of earthy, white dishes. But I still use many of my old favorite blue & white pieces right along with the new, white ones. I love the mix of old and new.

Oh gosh, what a great idea! The thought of having to pick one pattern for ALL TIME does seem daunting to me too. I like your approach much better! I may have to steal it.

lol! I was planning on doing this same thing with all white until I saw these photos. Then I thought, blue and white! I should do this with blue and white! And then I read your post and now I feel very predictable.

That is EXACTLY what I've always wanted to do, but this husband was dead against the blue and white. We picked things from a few different lines of Calvin Klein in blacks, browns, and creams instead, to coordinate Japanese non-matched-but-coordinated style with handmade ceramics in natural colors. But the blue and white still kills me. What a great bunch of examples you've got!

wow, what a lovely idea. the idea of mixing and matching patterns based on a theme for a registry is ingenious! I put together a collection of blue and white dishware from etsy on my blog that you can check out here.
