you can’t beat a $30 makeover that takes a chair from ripped up and beaten to spruced up and cute. d*s reader lindsey potts bought this chair at a garage sale for $15 and then bought sale fabric at hancocks to complete the look. great work, lindsey!
Fantastic job with the chair. I do the same thing with boudoir chairs and antique stools I find in England and then put them in my store. See the links for a few of the cool reincarnations!
wowow. i have that EXACT same chair that I got here in Italy. It was covered in lime green velvet. Of course there are few ‘deals’ in flea markets here, so I didn’t get it for $15… and then I got the springs in the seat done and had it covered in Designers’ Guild velvet…but now that I see yours I want to have mine recovered!!!!!
The gun in the background is just a bb gun and it is my brothers. I guess I should have noticed what was in the background before I took the before picture!
are there any good tutorials out there for reupholstering? I want to try that on a chair that my cat used as a scratching post, and I’m not willing to pay the $500 for a pro to do it.
Lindsey did you reupholster the chair yourself? We are currently haveing a chair reupholstered for mega bucks! We searched all over the city (SF) and didn’t find much of a price difference. There is no way I could make it look good if I tried to do it myself, so we bit the bullet and are having it redone by a professional. I will send d*s photo’s once it’s finished. :)
Doris- I also got those tables at a garage sale several years ago. they cost $3!! I was driving by kind of in a bad part of town and just happened upon them. I added some white paint.
Allison- I started reupholstering myself because the cost of getting it done was so high. If you are interested in talking about a price for me to do it, my email is pixystic@sbcglobal.net.
I love it!
It makes me laugh, because you could buy one of my skirts and blend into the chair! … I use a smaller scale of the exact same print for my skirts… that I make… (hee hee!)
I reupholstered an Ikea Lack table with the exact same fabric, I believe. I’m sick of it now, but I like what you’ve done.
And maybe they were playful jibs, and I don’t know where you all are from, but in many parts of the country, a gun’s no big deal at all and is very common, so I’m surprised to see so many comments about it…
Lindsey, Great job! I love that fabric and I’m actually looking for something similar but in just black and white. Is it just regular fabric or is it actually upholstery fabric? I haven’t been able to find anything I like so far and I wasn’t sure what kind of fabric to use exactly since it will be on a chair. I want it to last. Great job again!
Julie- The rug under the chair is from Urban Outfitters. You should be able to find it online, if they still have it. I bought it about a month ago.
Kacie- The fabric was home decor fabric, used for upholstery or drapery. If the chair will get a lot of sitting you should use home decor weight fabric or it will wear quick. see this link
That fabrics is absolutely gorgeous! After a bit of thrift store treasure hunting the other day, hubby and I found out that picking a fabric to use in a rehab project will probably be the hardest part for us. Thanks for the inspiration! Now I’ll be out looking for a fabulous damask!

I am so impressed!!!! The new fabric is beautiful!!!
Wow! What great results! The gun in the background of the before picture is kind of scary. yikes!
Sorry to hijack the focus of the post, but… Lindsey, where can I get a copy of your Chicago poster?
I love the fabric choice…love the colors!
What’s with the gun in the background of the “before” pictuer?
Did she recover it herself!? It looks lovely!
Looks great! Nice gun in the background there…
beautiful!!
Beautiful chair, but what’s up with the gun?
Quite a transformation Lindsey! May I ask where the Chicago print in the background is from?
Fabulous!
Lindsey should have incorporated the
riffle in the corner into the restoration of the chair. Great job even without the riffle!
How’d she reupholster this herself? It’s a great chair and I’m not just saying that because it seems she has a gun haha.

Awesome chair! Gun, meh! I just wish we still had a Hancocks close by.
So cute! I love that green. You’re inspiring me to upholster another chair now!
Great job on the chair! I love your fabric choice. And the rifle! :-D

Thanks for all the nice comments! The poster is from http://orkposters.com/chicago.html. They are inexpensive and great for artwork.

Also – I found that the basic Singer brand book on upholstery was invaluable when I was re-upholstering my couch (inspired by Grace’s post about the Liberty of London couch a while back)
you can see the finished couch

WOW, hard to believe that chair could even be saved! But she did a great job. :)
Great fabric on the chair, but what I want to know is:
WHAT carpet is that? I want it for my staircase!

a bit pricey, but try searching the internet to see if it is cheaper.
It’s a pellet gun! I had the same one as a child (I think).
