sneak peek: miller’s nursery

it seems that all my friends are starting to have children these days, so i’ve been paying special attention to nursery decor over the past few months. so i was thrilled to hear from designer denai jones of petunia pickle bottom (a great resource for all things baby and mom) and catch a glimpse into her son miller’s beautiful nursery. miller’s nursery was inspirational for me and i loved that the room had a sophisticated color palette that you don’t see every day in nurseries. the greys and soft yellows (with little bird and branch touches here and there) are so sweet and i love the use of the tree stump as a side table. you can see more of miller’s room (and denai’s handywork) right here on the ppb blog. thanks to denai for sharing!

(the bird mobile is by tamar mogendorff- i thought i’d head off any questions about it)

You’re so right! The sophisticated color palette is soothing and gender-neutral. I love it.

(I wonder how all those crazy colorful baby toys look in there…)

That is the classiest nursery I’ve ever seen! Love the prints, and the diaper bag, and the modern furnishings. It’s definitely something baby can grow in to.

Make the most of your sophisticated colour scheme. It won’t be long till Fisher Price, Disney and Lego invade. I know from experience – it’s almost impossible to keep it out.

This is one of the most calm and inspirational nurseries that I’ve seen in a long time. I love the colors! And the touch of wall paper is perfect.

Absolutely beautiful! Any resource you can give for the crib and changing table? Thanks!

This nursery is a lovely room-for an adult. It seems a little dull for a baby. And just wait until the baby is around 2 years old. Unless they have a full-time maid, that peaceful room will be a madhouse of toys and assorted kid stuff.

i LOVE this. absolutely LOVE it. it’s a nice alternative to the sickly sweet and cliche pastels that most people associate with babies. also i am currently adoring birds, and they are very understated and classy in this room. awesome!

What a great nursery! i love it!

What brand/line is your crib and changing table?

thanks!

I think the color palette is so amazing! So completely soothing – not something you expect to see in a nursery but it works so well.

wow. amazing. i don’t have kids or plans to have them and I still love this room! it’s such a welcome change from some of the overly sweet things out there.
great job!

amazing! I don’t even have or plan to have kids and yet i love this design. Such a welcome relief from the many overly sweet nursery’s out there. Great job!

Susan

Such a lovely and restful space. I’d love to know what that wall color is? Thanks.

Lana

So pretty! I love childrens’ rooms that are well designed and that don’t scream primary colors.

I love this calm nursery! I recently bought the same Cole & Sons wallpaper, and was planning to do the exact same thing in my bedroom (i.e. highlight one wall with the paper, and then match the paint to the background). Would ms. jones be kind enough to tell me what paint color she used??? it matches beautifully! thanks. love this blog.

I love Petunia Pickle Bottom’s line of diaper bags and blankets and thought many of them would be perfect inspiration for nursery. How exciting to see one come to life! Beautiful room!

Thanks for the beautiful post about DeNai’s nursery. For all those with questions about crib, paint, etc, click on the “right here” link in the post – all the products in the nursery are listed and linked to in the PPB blog entry.

i’ve always loved that little owl lamp, it’s just too cute.

it’s lovely don’t get me wrong but it’s an adults version of a nursery not a childs. Kids are more stimulated by bright colours and strong patterns.

I hope those pillows and that rug are machine washable!

thank you for all of the wonderful feedback! my husband and I love beautiful design and always turn to design sponge for inspiration. to answer a few of your questions: the panel crib and changing table are from Newport Cottages, the wall paint was a custom mix-Benjamin Moore/Flat Finish/OY-28, BK-24, RX-2 to match the Cole and Sons wallpaper.

The kid has his whole life to have a room like this- I like the idea, but not for a baby. I’d introduce a few more whimsical elements (such as color, pattern, repetition, etc…) to make it more fun and more reflective of the excitement, hope, wonderment, and happiness of a having a new baby!

amy

i find this quite depressing. it’s so over-designed. it’s a baby, not martha stewart. i hope you add some more interesting elements that are more designed with the baby in mind.

Art and design is obviously in the eye of the beholder. Our philosophy is that you don’t have to check your design sense at the door when you become a parent. Bedrooms in our household are intentionally tranquil and inviting; because we have the luxury of living in California our boys spend the majority of their time outdoors. As parents we try to offer as many stimulating opportunities to our children from educational toys and books, culture, travel, art, and music. Hopefully that gives an understanding of our parenting and design philosophy but if you still aren’t convinced you can get a snap shot of our stimulating life here http://www.parents.com/family-life/better-parenting/parenting-style/meet-the-parents-ventura-california/. Thanks for all of the wonderful feedback, good and bad.

A calm and soothing bedroom for a baby to unwind and sleep in strikes me as an excellent idea. There are so many other more appropriate places where babies can gain stimulation throughout the day. Anything that can be done to help a baby get to sleep, and sleep well, is wonderful!
