pure by ami mckay

everyone’s got something in their life that they’re not entirely proud of. for me, it’s the fact that i sort of abandoned my eco-conscious tendencies after college. in school i was one of the majorly green kids who timed their showers, worked at the birkenstock store, ate 100% vegan, and aimed to live simply with only a few items of clothing (all handmade from sustainable materials if possible). i even rode the hemp necklace train and had my own jam band radio show. yup- i’ve really changed.

i think after being into all things “green” in a somewhat extreme way i really reacted strongly and decided to give into my desire to own more than one pair of pants and occasionally take a shower longer than 3 minutes. over the years i’ve really swung in the other direction but recently i’ve started to wake back up a bit and realize that it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing affair. so as i ease back into living a green (or at least greener) lifestyle i’m starting to have more interest in designers specializing in eco-friendly products.

normally i subscribe to the “reuse” method of green furniture (meaning thrift store or vintage finds) but i’ve really taken a shine to these new eco-friendly pieces from pure by designer ami mckay. a lot of times i find that eco-friendly furniture seems to means a room full of bamboo chairs and tables that all look the same- but i love the way that ami’s furniture combines something a little elegant and glam (like those lovely carved legs) with something crafty (i love the simple floral embroidery on each piece) and eco-friendly. ami’s green methods and materials are outlined right here and her entire line of furniture, ranging from seating to casegoods, can be viewed right here. whether you’re a hard core eco shopper or just a slowly reforming ex-hippy like me i think we can all agree that being a bit more earth conscious is never a bad thing- especially when you don’t have to sacrifice style.

[update: sorry for the rss spam today- we're on it. i'm not sure how that happened but my apologies to anyone reading via rss]

Ex-hippies unite! I was on my way to being LEED certified in college and I have yet to get there – soon enough! I think that greening your daily life should be a New year’s resolution – there’s a movement YOU can help start, bizlady!

Wow, these are really stunning, sleek uses of embroidery, and these pieces completely debunk any dumpy, hippie preconceptions people may have of eco-friendly design. I’m in awe!

THESE are the kinds of pieces I want in my house! Classic and simple, but with very distinct personalities as shown in their accents. Love it, I’ll take twenty, thank you!

absolutely gorgeous design. so glad that eco-chic is on the rise….designers such as amy show their passion for the environment through their art–i believe this trend is on the rise and the earth (and our collective sense of style) will thank us.

I love the arms of these furniture pieces more than anything else…the designs are nice as well but for some reason I am drawn to the arms…

I’ve been looking for MONTHS for wall lamps for my living room, and the ones in the second picture would really be perfect. I was wondering if I could get some information on those – it would be SO helpful!
