my mill valley home away from home

monday as i was bumping around in the air (i seriously sobbed through the last 15 minutes of the flight it was that scary) on my way home to new york, the one thing that kept me from totally losing it (because i am soo that kind of flyer) was staring at a copy of home magazine i had picked up in the airport. as i flipped through the pages and tried to think of a happier place than my tiny turbulent plane, i caught this beautiful mill valley home that happens to belong to julie carlson of remodelista. i knew portions of it looked familiar but i didn’t put it all together until i heard from julie yesterday. perhaps if i’d been spending more time reading the text and less time praying i wasn’t about to plummet to my death i’d have caught the details. but thankfully julie filled me in on them.

her gorgeous mill valley, ca home (designed by buttrick wong architects) is the sort of house i always wish i had: open, airy, breezy and full of natural light. i loved the combination of old and new in her home- and all of that bright white. i could never pull off that much white in my house (it would be covered in dirty cat paw-prints in no time) but julie does it with style. you can catch the full story in this month’s home magazine, right here on their website, or check out julie’s piece on her bedroom and how to duplicate their look “for less”. thanks, julie!

grace, i am so that kind of flier too so i buy at least 5 magazines for serious distraction. we’re not alone…there are millions like us. gorgeous post, thanks.

sorry to hear about your flight grace! i’m the same way. i have panic attacks during turbulence. yuck, yuck…

remodelista is one of my favorite blogs. i’ve saved so many images from there, as i dream about one day renovating our kitchen and bathrooms. thanks for the tip on this story.

Nikko

Thanks for these images! I love the soaring whiteness with just little hints of color.

Lorazepam – I take it for flight anxiety, it’s the only thing that works. Talk to your doctor. ;)

glad you didn’t plummet to your death.

and I’m sure Ms. Jackson would promise to keep her feet wiped if she lived in a white house.

zara

this house is perfection, i’d move right away! looots of white, perfect balance with the wood. and the bathroom is incredibly simple

I feel your fear. Bring those drugs along for backup. I’ll never forget the puddle jumper flight I took when my husband was screaming we were all going to die, while I was as cool as a cucumber because I had taken a Vicadin (for non-flight related pain).

This house is beautiful, and Mill Valley is the city I want to relocate to.

Kristan

Stunning. The last photo in particular appeals to me personally, I think because there is the natural wood accenting all that white.

LOVE the outdoor shower, there was one in a rental home on vacation once and it was my favorite part of the house by far

jill

so pretty and uncluttered. i love all the white + wood and big windows with lots of light. where are the sofas and coffee table from?

Melissa

Beautiful home! I love the outdoor shower.

Yes, lorazepam is the answer as Jessica suggests. It’s a low dose, and it doesn’t impair your ability to function, just keeps you from freaking out, no matter how much you want to. Ask your doctor my fellow fearful flyer.

Gizel

Beautiful images, I could move in now. I love the mix of expensive carpentry work and low-key objects.

Padma

Ooooh! Love it! Could you please tell me where I can find that fantastic white sofa? I could swan dive into it!

my savior has been bach’s rescue remedy. when i used to fly more, i would go through bottles of it! glad you made it home safely grace!
