sneak peek: caroline hwang

today’s second sneak peek belongs to artist caroline hwang. based in brooklyn, caroline was kind enough to share photos of her studio/apartment in clinton hill with us today. i hope you’ll enjoy them- as always, you can click here for additional, full-sized images of caroline‘s home with commentary. [thanks, caroline!]

[Welcome to my humble abode here in lovely Clinton Hill (possibly Bed-Stuy), Brooklyn. I share this space with my wonderful roommate and great friend, Lisa Butterworth. I have lived here for nearly 4 years now and I'm one of the few and very lucky people that hasn't had to move since moving to New York. The space is a bit mish-mashed, but I love it for what it is with its beautiful, natural light. I love plants in the house, it just makes everything so much more pleasant. I also love that little dog in the photo above, her name is Pinky and she's the best. One of the pieces on the wall is mine for my last show at Giant Robot SF and a couple of polaroids that I took in my whirlwind tour of Europe last fall. Other artwork: Souther Salazar letterpress print, Saelee Oh paper cut-out, Heather Culp photo and photo/painting.]

[This photo directly above is my studio space, its actually 1/3 of my living room. I have a collection of Ed Emberley books that I love. I was lucky enough to be a student of the Clayton Brothers and they were nice enough to give me a couple of their prints for my birthday one year. Other random artwork: drawing by Rich Jacobs, print on wood by Christopher Ruess (aka emuse, Gothic Dolphin). My friend Souther made me a mix cd with an awesome cd cover which I have kept displayed since he gave it to me. One of the songs on the mix was a mash up of "Caroline" songs that he put together in Garageband. Its actually pretty funny.]

[This cabinet was found on the street by one of my previous roommates and we re-painted it. Its a bit janky, but I actually really love it.]

[One of my favorite art pieces from one of my favorite artists and friend, Steven Harrington. His work is always inspiring. In the jar is one of the coolest finds of the last couple of months, Papabuble. Its this new candy store in Little Italy where they hand make all their hard candies with the craziest designs. This one is called "medical mix" for Valentine's day, it has little images like ambulances, band-aids, pills, etc.]

[Another one of my favorite things in the house- this old school clock.]

[Lisa's parents and grandmother. Old photos always look so much nicer than photos from now.]

Love the green wall paint. I’m leaning toward painting that color too. And love Pinky. My first dog, a schnauzer, was nicknamed Pinky too.

I love the minty green wall color. The industrial bookshelves with the cantilever shelves is pretty cool.

this place totally reflects the style of mine – now i have a better idea of how to place things for better space and maximum effect. thanks for the inspiration! (and the photo of the john&yoko record cover next to the tall plant by the window just took my breath away)

That cabinet’s color is to die for, and that dreamy green wall in the living room makes me want to take a little catnap. you’ve found a way to add color without it being loud, and load your home with lovely things without it being cluttered.

Lovely home and I can say home, as you have given that impression, a home should be just that and not a house, a house is something that is a show piece.
