Portland + Marilyn Neuhart + George Nelson + Velocity

After a 5 day trip and lots of truck stop food we made it to Portland. The one thing I noticed about America on our trip was how Giant everything is when you start getting west giant storms, food, hills, mountains, rivers. It’s a wonderful thing to see I’m so glad we drove across. Today I thought I’d share some more of my favorite designers and design personalities so read on to find out more…

Marilyn Neuhart:

Marilyn Neuhart is a designer that worked with Alexander Girard. she made these dolls for textiles and objects store in NYC in the early 60s. You can still purchase these wonderful dolls at the link here.

George Nelson Clocks:

The Nelson office produced tons of iconic designs but they also produced wonderful designs that are not seen as often in the Market place. Here are a few of the clock designs that I love. I think my favorite would be the chess piece clock.

Velocity Art and Design:

What can I say about Velocity? I was a fan long before I ever showed art there. Owner John Tusher must be able to see the future. He has directed Velocity in such amazing directions over the years. From 2001 when Velocity seemed to be pure organic modernism to after the birth of his son when innocence and fun became a focus. I think Velocity is a reflection of John’s life. In 2001 when I first discovered Velocity I knew that the feeling I got from the place was the direction I wanted my art to go. Amy Ruppel, Rex Ray, Ty Best, along with all of the other designers really made me open my eyes to other things. I don’t remember seeing anything like Velocity before that. Now I show there, which was a REAL dream come true for me.

On April 16th I will be at Velocity in Seattle at the first Lab which is a real honor for me from 6-8 p.m. John and I will be talking about design and how I came to show at Velocity. So come by and say hello. The pictures are of John and Velocity when we visited last year. I can’t wait to see the new
showroom!
