Hello, my name’s Kevin Derrick and I write a blog called designphiladelphia.
That would be my apartment. As an Interior Designer on a shoestring budget, my home includes everything from the requisite flat-pack Ikeastuff, any number of thrift store finds, some very thoughtful gifts from friends & family and *of course of course* a couple of DIY projects along the way for good measure… (I couldn’t call myself a design devotee without, now could I?)
For the week ahead I’d like to give a nod to Ms. Grace Bonney’s oh-so wonderful feature, the Sneak Peek. Focusing on a small portion of Philadelphia’s creative community, I’ll introduce each designer/artist/writer/etc through both their work and the manner in which they live. My hope is that you’ll connect not only with their furnishings and things (which I must say are often really quite nice) but also with the person as well… Just as nice and and far more interesting, if you ask me.
To Grace: Thank you for the opportunity for show n tell. You’re a stand-up gal and truly a pioneer in the crazy world of design journalism. Many will try but few even come close.
To the Reader: Thank you for watching and please enjoy the show. ;)

My boyfriend brought home a thrifstore painting when we first moved in together that quite resembles your ship painting above the bed. I have always voiced my disgust of it while secretly loving it inside. We dubbed it The Burns and it is always the center of attention at parties. Where, pray tell, did you find your “Burns”?
Hi Emilia, thanks for the comment. I snatched the painting from an unused room in my parent’s house when I got my first place in college. (I thought big art would help make my place actually look furnished, haha.) After 8+ yeasrs in storage, I almost tossed it just a few months ago, but my design-savvy boyfriend convinced me otherwise. Glad he did, it’s now one of my faves…
