the other day i got a call from a television program asking me to come on to talk about affordable home good. so for the past few weeks i’ve been rounding up environmentally friendly products under $100 (ala my monthly domino column) and realizing how incredibly heavy and HUGE the packaging can be for a small roundup of items. so when i stumbled upon a few fun flat-pack pieces at eon (thanks beth!) i started thinking about how much easier it would be to transport things if they were all flat-packed. not everything can be broken down into flat elements and then reassembled but i’m totally enamored of pieces that can- like these little wooden eggs, kiwi, lamp and hanging pendant, all from eon in new zealand. just re-connect all of the pieces together and ta-da! you’ve got a small accessory or lamp for your home. blu dot also flat-packs several of their pieces like this barbarella table ($449) and 2d:3d letter tray ($45).
and the mailbox? ok, i cheated, it’s not flat-packed but i saw it at eon and couldn’t resist. it’s so cute and retro. click here to shop eon’s online collection. [i'll share more details on the tv segment (if anyone wants to laugh at me while i try to act calm) when things are finalized]

That’s awesome Grace. Congrats! I hereby promise not to laugh…too much :)
The IQ Light is another great flat-pack item [and the packaging is efficient and incredibly cool!].
Flat-pac is so convenient, and also lets out your inner crafter/diy-er when you put it together! our shop has flat packed, laser cut cardboard animal ‘trophies’ for your wall, and the life size is $48. I’ve also seen a cardboard baby bassinet. The cardboard is also great because you can always recycle it when you grow tired of it or don’t need it anymore.
It’s amazing what’s out there! So happy you included the mailbox :) Can’t wait to find out more about the TV spot!
What about the IQ light? It’s awesomely cute and flat packed too.

Grace – Totally unrelated but wanted to point you to this blog since you have a wedding to plan: http://www.toastandtables.blogspot.com/
flat packs are so great! does this mean less shipping costs and smaller boxes?
Matt Butler’s ‘zaishu’ stools/tables were first designed for an Australian exhibition themed ‘The tyranny of distance’… Being so far away from the ‘rest of the world’ Matt came up with a flat pack product which could be posted anywhere for not much. They ” feature artwork from various community groups, endangered tribal art, as well as hand painted work from the last of the Bollywood artists.
Made from native plantation pine, using water-based inks and varnish, Zaishu has a ‘Good Environmental Choice’ certification and comes flat-packed in collectable limited editions which simply slot together.”
I LOVE them… http://www.zaishu.com
congratulations on the television segment. that is so exciting. i can’t wait to see it!
I am wondering can I really order from Eon or is this a tease? Are the prices in US$ or NZ$? They don’t give info. for clueless Americans (me)
Grace, where can we find that super cute mailbox in the United States? The shipping from New Zealand must be a killer!
I just received my flatpack cog lights from blue marmalade and they are beautiful! They have many other great flatpack products. Great packaging as well – using it as a file folder….
