to say that i’m excited about this year’s 2008 d*s scholarship would be a vast understatement. last year the scholarship was such an inspiration to me and it has been such a joy to watch our 2007 winners grow and continue to produce incredible work. this year d*s is thrilled to have the support of three companies that lent a hand in a big, big way. thanks to domino magazine, 2modern and paper studio, this year, the d*s scholarship will be giving away $11,000 in prize money. that’s right- eleven thousand! it’s because of their generosity that we’ll be able to award four prizes of $5,500, $2,750, $1,650 and $1,100- and hopefully help the next generation of designers get their start. the details have changed a bit this year, they are as follows:
- entry requirements: all entrants must be currently enrolled (proof of enrollment is required) in an undergraduate program studying design or art.
- areas of study: this year we’re looking to narrow the areas of study to: product/furniture design, graphic/pattern/surface design, textiles, ceramics and interior design. unfortunately d*s does not cover fashion, jewelry design, art/design history or architecture so these fields will not be included. for help finding other scholarships click here and here.
- location: this year we are expanding the entries to include submissions from students in the united states as well as canada. all payments will be awards in us dollars.
because d*s understands that a students needs don’t always fit into the categories of tuition and housing, this will remain a no-strings-attached award. these funds may be spent in any way the winners feel best suits their creative needs. whether that’s paying for an un-paid internship abroad, expensive supplies to test a new medium or financing a dream project- we’re here to help.
the details and application for this year’s scholarship will be permanently housed right here, on the d*s scholarship page. here you can find more information on the scholarship, deadlines and download the application.
THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS: APRIL 30TH, 2008. Winners will be announced on Monday, May 5th, 2008.
want to help? d*s is a small team and we could really use your help getting the word out about this year’s scholarship. designer julia rothman kindly offered to create a downloadable flyer for the scholarship so if you’re able, we’d be so appreciative if you could print out the flyer and either stick it on a campus near your or politely place it where local students might be. thank you to julia for taking the time to make this year’s flyer and thank you to everyone for helping us get the word out about this year’s $11,000 scholarship!

Grace,
I think what you’re doing to help these design students is wonderful!
Cindy
this is such a great thing! what is that font you used for the text
“2008 Design Sponge Scholarship”?
Wow, Grace! What an amazing opportunity for design students! Too bad my husband’s in animation…but very, VERY cool nonetheless
how wonderful!!
Grace, I’m a chemist working at Colorado State University; needless is to say that I am sad your scholarship doesn’t cover me… anyways, the art building is right across from chemistry at the CSU campus and I was planning on posting a couple of flyers to promote your endevour here at d*s. I noticed however that 1) the deadline on the flyer is “May 1st”, but on the website is “April 30th”, 2) the flyer states under “requirements” that the student must be enrolled in a US institution, but the website says Canada schools are also included this year…
Shall I print “as is” or you wanna change those things first?
Ah! And I’m crossing my finger for a creative chemist to start a scholarship as generous and helpful as yours, directed to us scientists in need!!
That’s awesome Grace!!! What you are doing will truly make a difference :-)
ooh! thanks jala!
i’ll change this right away, thanks!
grace :)
Wow! I’m so excited to share this with some of my friends. You guys should think about including photography, next year maybe. ;)
Running the flyer over to Mississippi State Interior Design Department as well as the Art School! This is a great thing to do Grace.
what about the poor graduate students!?
Catherine
I do believe there are other scholarships available beyond the D*S Scholarship.
I’ve provided links above to help them with their search. We donated over $2,000 to graduate students last year so this year we’re focusing on undergrads.
Grace
I will make sure the RISD furniture design department gets the word. Some students I just covered for Artscope Magazine have a show opening on Thursday, many are graduating seniors who I’m sure could use the help!
I’m having trouble accessing the link to the application! (It flashes the address for a moment and then displays nothing – even copy-pasting the link doesn’t work for me.) It may be a problem with my computer, but perhaps others are having this problem? Any alternative link I could click?
just wondering when and how the winners will be announced? It really is a great scholarship Thanks for doing it!
