The Universe by Takashi Iwasaki
Oil on canvas
Winnipeg is a very creative city. We have great local galleries that support local artists and a very supportive community of people that come out to the shows. One artist in particular is gaining recognition around the world for his brightly coloured works that are inspired by
his positive attitude. Takashi Iwasaki is, as he calls it, an “art enjoyer”. But now it seems that many people are enjoyers of his art. We can’t help but fall in love with all the vibrant colours and enchanting drawings.

Takashi works in many mediums, which he says keeps his thoughts and ideas fluid and flexible. Some of the various media he uses include painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and embroidery. He has even come up with a nickname for a group of his abstract drawings, which he calls “Abbies”.

I have recently discovered his work and LOVE it- esp. the embroideries- such interesting shapes and lively color palette. This friday I am actually sharing his sketchbooks on my book blog book-by-its-cover.com. Thanks for sharing all the info and images!
I am so happy to see a post on this wonderful artist, I have been a fan of his for awhile and love the happy energy behind his work.

Wow, thanks so much for this info! My BF and I run a gallery here in Mtl (I’m the Winniepegger who just commented in your last post) and we are definitely going to contact Takashi.
Have you seen Garrett VanWinkles work? (another Winnipegger). He graduated from UofM fine arts in 2000/2001 I think. Here’s a link to his work if you’re interested. We show his work in our gallery a lot, he’s friends with the whole art lodge crew.

I am so drawn to his style!!! I love it, would also love one of his works. I immediately went to his website and looked at EVERYTHING!!! His colors are so vibrant, his work is candy for the mind.
i just stumbled on to this artist’s work last week and i think i’m in love! i was excited to see this feature, and i’m glad that you included an image of “the universe.” i hadn’t seen it before and i really love the way the colors are vibrant on the sides and wash into almost pastels in the main part of the painting.
We’re glad you’re all loving his work! Takashi was actually a classmate of ours so we’re very excited for all the attention he’s been getting! He’s such an interesting guy!
Angie: yes, we are familiar with Garrett VanWinkle’s work. The big names always linger around UofM!
i posted this on the main blog page – but i just saw this artist’s stuff at the gallery around the corner from my house, it’s amazing in person! (http://le-gallery.ca)
