when i first started coding this post last night i completely got the before and after confused. naturally drawn to the gorgeous gees bend-inspired mural above maya’s bed, i assumed the colorful version was the after. but i had it backwards! cincinatti based designer maya actually started with the gees bend look and then moved to the simpler grey look in order to “embrace the austerity of the space.” i think both turned out well- they’re just totally different looks. so for me this could be a before/after or an after/before. either way, thanks to maya for sharing her lovely bedroom with us.

I agree – I would have thought the painted wall art was the after; I’ve always wanted to try that – in lieu of having a headboard – but could never decide on a pattern or color. Both are lovely – what is pictured in the frames?
I would have thought the same thing. The painting was rich and lively! But the frames are simple and pretty as well.

Does her cat actually only sit on that folded blanket? If so, that’s amazing and how can I teach my cats that trick so there are not hairballs all over my bedding?
a bit boring.
Not excited about this one. I want to see more ingenuity and creativity. Perhaps I just rely too much on d*s for my daily does of inspiration. Not getting any from this before and after. But there is something for everyone’s taste here, which is a good thing.
Thanks for your comments! For fun, I tried to match the After photo to the year-old Before; hence trying to pose the cat, which amused me a lot more than it did her.
The ‘quilt’ was made of paper strips and doublestick tape. It was a quick and easy project, while we contemplated our options. In the end, we decided to really pare down the color palette for a subdued, tranquil space. The floating frames contain antique lithographs of birds’ eggs.

The difference between the two looks is truly amazing. Actually, it’s almost as amazing as that cat.
i think it’s lovely and clean! I love the after…great job maya! oh, and the kitty is just too cute!

I think it looks like a tranquil and lovely space, just right for a bedroom. The new subdued color palette is both modern and soothing. I wish we could see the antique lithographs, I bet they are wonderful. Thanks for sharing your room with us!
I just love seeing what people like, don’t like, want to change.. so inspiring.
I love those bedside tables – could you tell us more about those? I’m working on a plan for my ideal beside tables. Need space for lots of books, a drawer for the stuff not to be on show such as tablets, a bit for the lamp – love the raised portion on thes ones.
One more thing… could someone do a DIY on headboards? I’d like to make my own upholstered one…
cheers!

Jenny, the tables were a vintage steal; we were really looking for something with space for books but didn’t want solid-looking pieces with drawers, so these are perfect for us.
Looking at the two photos, I realize that what I love most about the room can’t really be appreciated — the aged edges of the prints, the jaunty table legs and headboard, the repetition of rounded shapes everywhere [eggs, circles on duvet, pillow pattern, quilt stitching]. For me, these sorts of details make the room, but they’re not obvious enough to come through in a little photo.
