before and after: dresser

dresser-pre-transformation.jpg
cara and mark of sewbettie sent in this fantastic before and after dresser project. what was once a normal, fairly drab wooden dresser is now a clean sleek piece that blends effortlessly into their room. details: carla drilled holes into the dresser and added decorative knobs (below). she explained that “the dresser is really larger and the bedroom is fairly small so i painted the walls and the dresser the same color (behr’s “manhattan mist”) so that the dresser would disappear into the walls”. such a great idea. the oil painting in the “after” picture was done by mark and the vase is a gifted mccoy knock-off from cara’s mom. thanks for sharing, cara and mark!

That is so cool! I always pass up that sort of oak-y bland wooden furniture at thrift or tag sales. NO MORE!
I Looooove this!

Wow!! I’m positively in LUST with this wall color! I’ve been planning on painting my home office a soft shade of grey and this would be perfect!

Loves, loves, loves!!

I hate to say it but I like the before shot more than the after one…

Thanks for posting this Grace! My parents just built a new house and the knobs were leftover from that… I’m not sure the name of the company. Sorry!

I like the before shot as well – this color makes the dresser look cheaper – sorry!

ohhh this, along with Mike’s dresser, is really changing my opinion on before and afters. This is really clever, well done!

Nooooooooooooo! To painting furniture…you’ll regret it later

Oh man! I love the debate on painting furniture! I totally see your point Georgia, but the wood in this dresser was in terrible shape. Mark had it as a teenager – it was covered in stickers and scratches. Plus, in my opinion, the wood color was pretty ugly.

Sorry, but I think veneer NEEDS to be painted. That fake wood grain only serves as a sad reminder that your furniture is made of plastic and particleboard. I do think that a contrasting color on the top or drawer fronts would add a lot though.

margaret

could you tell me exactly what kind of paint you used? also, did you use primer (if so, what kind?), how many coats and did you use a roller or a brush? thanks!

Kristy

Great painting. I like the color you chose but if you do decide to spice it up with another color later I love mustard yellow and gray together. Just wondering… is there a reason the dresser is all the way in the corner? Personally I think it would look much better if you moved it about4-5 inches away from it… Just my 2 cents. Congrats on a great job :)

Cara | Sew Bettie

It is only in the corner so I could fit the whole thing in the picture frame… the room is tiny and we have a big bed so that is the only reason….

Margaret – I used paint from Behr. The color is called “manhattan mist”. I didn’t use a primer. I used a brush and just did one coat.

Unfortunately it isn’t for sale — thanks for the compliment though!

I love how great your project turned out — I’ve never seen your room look so neat! I like the way one piece of pottery looks by itself, maybe I should wean down my collection. The knobs that someone asked about is from Liberty Hardware — you can find them on line.
