i’m on a textiles kick today- i’ve been looking for affordable textiles all morning so i can have arm-covers made for our spotted hable construction couch. despite my best efforts (nail-trimming, apple spray, feliway) the cats have pretty much trashed the arms of our sofa so i figured i’d make some arm covers to camouflage the spots because i can’t afford to reupholster it right now. not to mention they’ll probably just scratch through it again (my cats and my love of fine upholstery were never meant to meet). but like always, i ended up finding something else for the house instead: fabric for a new shower curtain! our dark brown bathroom has sorely needed some bold color for a while now so i decided to grab a few yards of amy butler‘s grey lacework fabric and turquoise royal garden. the tailor below our house sews a mean shower curtain for like $12 for i figured i’d try these out and see how they work. photos to come soon, i just wanted to share the patterns because i’m really loving those peacocks right now.

You may be totally fed up with “cat advice,” but have you tried Soft Paws? They’re vinyl caps that glue onto kitty claws – I have a friend who swears by them. I’m lucky that my cat exhibits nothing but disdain for my sofa…perhaps she just doesn’t like my taste. ;)

I love both of these fabrics so much …. especially the peackocks! and boy oh boy do I know what you mean about the kitties! My cat Picasso just loves to work his little claws across the back of our couch :)

We use Soft Paws on our cat, and they do help. They’re not a perfect solution, unfortunately, because they do fall off/get bitten off regularly and when that happens he’s still able to scratch up our chairs and couch, but they have definitely improved the situation and slowed down the damage.

I love Amy Butler fabrics and peacocks! Peacock colors are the inspiration for the entire color palette of my living room/other areas of the house. I have a Mardi Gras mask I made out of peacock feathers that was the jumping off point. I also have peacocks on my Christmas tree.

In short, Yay Peacocks!

I have cats too, and Feliway spray only semi works for me on the scratching front. The only way I was able to truly stop the cluprit from targeting my living room chair was to catch him in the act, pull him off and transfer him to his scratching post. After he scratched on that I rewarded him with some bonito flakes. Now every time I see him scratch on his post, I give him some bonito. So far, so good…

Here’s another vote for Soft Paws. Although they’re not a perfect solution, they do work nicely.

Soft Paws saved all of my furniture, and you can color-coordinate with your decor! It takes a bit for the cats to get used to them, but it’s worth it.

I’m looking for textiles too, for couch accent pillows. Does anyone know of any online guides or lists for independent textile and fabric companies? In the meantime, I’m slowly finding them, one by one…

Cat Advice!
Grace, I have three very different cats & solved the cat scratch problem without messing with their paws. My cats hate scratching posts too.
I had half of my home redesigned for a pretty penny & I don’t have a problem. I bought cheap corrugated cardboard boxes. They’re at Target & Petco.

Here’s type I bought: click this

By the way, I have pillows with your couch fabric. I feel for you! :)

Love the turquoise royal garden fabric. I actually bought the exact same stuff the day before this post to make a knitting needle case! Great minds…. :)

I have to give another shout out for soft claws. We just bought our first “grown up” couch and were really worried about the future of our furniture, but they saved me from a world of frustration. You do want to check their paws periodically to make sure that all the nails still have them stuck on because even one little nail can do damage, but if you’re dilligent it works really well. Feliway is great for spraying & stress issues (I love the diffuser), but not so much for scratching.

3 words…..double stick tape! Put it on the arms of your couch and it will thoroughly frustrate the cats.
