jen at painted fish studio sent over this wonderful chair project that i thought would be perfect for before and after. jen had her great-grandmother’s chair reupholstered with custom work by sarah kusa (who was featured in the d*s twin cities guide). the chair was in pretty bad shape so it was jen’s goal to
have the chair reupholstered by the end up this year. after struggling with choosing fabric patterns and colors, a friend passed along sarah’s web site, and jen immediately knew that a screen print would be perfect for the chair. she she sent sarah an email, and she agreed to do the custom work! jen picked a screen that sarah uses in her current work, printed on a natural linen. they worked together on ink color choices together and now that it’s finished jen says, “i absolutely love it, and it’s a completely new chair!”. you can see more of jen’s chair right here and find more information on sarah kusa right here. thanks so much to jen and sarah for sharing!

What a beautiful chair!
I always assume reupholstering is prohibitively expensive. Would you mind giving us an idea as to what this do-over cost in terms of labor? I have an old chair that I’m thinking of leaving out on the sidewalk this weekend (this is common in Brooklyn!), but this post has me reconsidering…
What a fabulous transformation – that chair is beautiful!
Wow, really really beautiful and subtle. I think she’s going to love that chair for a long, long time!
LOVE the before and afters. Keep them coming!
Great job!
Looks just gorgeous. My favorite kind of project taking something and breathing new life into it, especially a classic like this chair.
Depending on where one lives, and the difficulty of the chair — curves etc. — and what type of details are chosen (piping) labor can cost roughly from $200-$400. But that’s totally a rough estimate.
Lovely.
What a great idea to use a screen print! The chair turned out beautifully.
hi! this is jen, the owner of the chair. thanks for all of the wonderful comments. i can’t claim to take any of the credit, as sarah’s work is fabulous. lucy, it was pretty expensive to get the chair reupholstered. i spent $544. i will admit that i did not get estimates, and i probably could have had it done for less, but i was impatient and wanted it done fast! it’s a sentimental piece for me, and cost wasn’t an issue.
That chair came out great! The fabric and ink choices work really well with the finish of the wood.
Hi, everyone… I’m glad you like the chair! Jen is so gracious — she had a great vision for her piece, and she was fabulous to collaborate with. It’s great to find “design Zen” with another artist! I definitely hope to do more with furniture; it’s such a cool way of thinking in 3-D. Thanks, Jen and Grace, for showing this off! sk
Absolutely stunning! What inspiration.
