portable collectable lights coat rack

1
i’m off to philly in a few hours to meet up with joy for tonight’s biz lady meetup. we’re both so excited to meet everyone and kick off the first meet up in the national “tour” this year. i’m going to get at least 4 more posts up today so i wanted to get an early start today.

designer merrill lyons sent over this beautiful coat rack that was created as part of merrill’s senior thesis at risd. merill wanted to “create integrated lighting products for the young urban dweller while keeping in mind the conservation of space as well as defining an aesthetic ideal for each item.” the rack consists of a shelf containing the portable lights with fitted rechargeable reservoirs and painted metal hooks for hanging coats and scarves. i’m drawn mainly to the rechargable lights (similar to vessel‘s candela lights) but i love the twist on imagery and color. you can contact merrill right here if you’re interested in purchasing or would like to inquire about retail possibilities. [thanks, merrill!]

i love the arrangement, and the objects, but i can’t see black lights without thinking bad night clubs and/or ravers. i know… it’s my loss! but i can’t look at that coat rack without thinking that “the young urban dweller” translates to “tooth gnashing drunkard with style”.

what an impressive coat rack! The last creative coat rack i saw was in Russia and it was made from reindeer antlers. I would install this one without question! Uber-cool!!

i would like to respond to the “black lights” comment and note that due to the availablitiy or lack thereof of white led’s to construct this project I had to embrace the bluish tone as seen here but in production they will be more of a white light

I like the idea that a coat rack can have a “day look” and a “night look.”
