Probably the most recognizable Australian art is our Aboriginal Art. I particularly love the work of The Pwerle Sisters – Minnie, Molly & Emily who are from the Urultja Community in the Western desert of Australia. Artists from this region have been an important part of the contemporary Aboriginal Art movement and have become of particular interest in the last 10 years to dealers and collectors since the death of prominent female Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye who was from this same region and in her lifetime is said to have painted somewhere between 8,000 and 10,000 pieces. Any US sources for works like these? I LOVE them!!
seriously, does anyone have any sources?!??! They convey such an incredible sense of process and “activity”!
I agree, these paintings really, really speak to me on a level that most don’t. Sources?
I found this site to buy those paintings:
http://www.dacou.com.au/html/pwerle_sisters.html
In La Jolla, S. California, contact Peter and Christine Molloy, who sell only works from Utopia, in the Central Desert region of the Northern territory: http://www.molloygallery.com
An excellent dealer in Perth, Western Australia, is Anna Kwiecinska, who shows a great variety of Aboriginal artists, inlcuding works by the esteemed Petyarre sisters and the rising star, Aby Loy Kemarre. That’s at http://www.gadflygallery.com
You should also visit the website of Indigenart, in Subiaco, Western Australia, a great authority on Aboriginal art from all over Australia: http://www.indigenart.com.au
I think there’s also an Indigenart in Melbourne.
If anyone needs any more info, I’m happy to help.
UVA’s Kluge-Ruhe museum is dedicated aboriginal art.
Definitely a worthwhile stop if you’re traveling near Charlottesville.

Wow, this stuff is amazing…when I first scrolled past this, I thought for a split second that it was my friend Tim’s artwork. Uh, he’s not aboriginal, but he just married an Australian! For those interested:

Hi,
I believe I am the person Anne Gearon is referring to. I own an Aboriginal Art Gallery in Chicago specialising in contemporary Australian Aboriginal art. If you are after an artist that is not on our website, we can source the works for you. We currently have an exhibition on at the River East Art Center and will next month be moving to a gallery space in the gallery district at River North. Please feel free to contact me on my cell at (312) 560 6429. I look forward to being able to share my passion for Aboriginal art to anyone interested in learning more about these amazing people and their culture.
Hi we have a gallery in Sydney Australia and we specialize in Australian Aboriginal Art. In fact we’ve just received a new collection of works by EMILY PWERLE featured in this article. These paintings are quite difficult to source! We ship paintings to the USA about every second day of the week. Please check out our website and feel free to send us an enquiry (no obligation of course). All works featured on the website are available for sale. Cheers! Alesha, Gallery Manager.
Our web address is http://www.artery.com.au
I will only say!
Aboriginal art is one of the most exiting areas of the modern art. This art is famous with its glorious history.
I appreciate to all those artists who are making this art more and more successful with their paintings.
So we should promote them by purchasing their paintings
Thanks!!!!!!
