bamboo chairs

despite a massive dining room chair search (which turned into a slideshow)ac and i still haven’t found dining chairs. we did a big house cleaning this week and now our dining room is empty except for our table. i’ve found myself obsessing over these jonathan adler bamboo regency chairs but sadly the 500 bucks a pop price tag is way out of my price range. then i thought about calling an event rental company and buying the classic bamboo chiavari chairs that everyone has at their wedding, but they don’t look that comfy, even with cushions- they seem a little narrow. but i’m willing to get some chairs that need to be fixed up and painted- but where oh where are my reasonable priced bamboo/regency styled chairs? i love the styles above and below but where is the middle ground? all i can find are $75 wedding chairs and $500-$1000 fancy versions. does anyone have a great resource or tips for finding bamboo regency style chairs- preferably with arms? I think that’s a style you can still find at flea markets. It’s on the cusp of getting popular, but not quite huge yet. . .

SO FUNNY….after reading the blog this morning, i was surfing channels and came across “The Golden Girls”. and wouldn’t you know it…..they were all gathered around the kitchen table sitting on their bamboo regency style chairs!!! road trip to miami?? :)

I was going to suggest Ballard also, but I’m surprised Brocade doesn’t have anything like this.

Bill

I’ve been searching like mad for a couple of these as well! I still think $270+ is a little pricey though! Great posts!!

Yep, the Golden Girls have got bamboo furniture all wrapped up. After painting an old bamboo coffee table and mirror recently, I flopped down in front of the TV and started watching the Golden Girls and realised sadly that the fruits of my labour were a bit more Estelle Getty than Jonathan Adler…

you might consider finding some thonet chairs (like the ones you linked to at Todd Oldham’s site)–they’re way more comfy, can still be found for relatively lower prices, and still have a cool aesthetic…

I became obsessed with the green Adler chairs last year after buying my first place last fall. Being a single gal with a new mortgage to pay, I bought folding bamboo chairs from Target (2 for $50) and painted them. It’s probably way, way more low budget than you’re interested in, but they’re surprisingly sturdy and comfortable for anyone looking for a less-expensive alternative.

To add to the too-pricey category: Williams Sonoma Home also has some gorgeous chairs too. Oxblood color’s on sale but still quite spendy.

I second the Macau armchair from Ballard Designs — best in the lower price range.

I have 2 bamboo chairs that I recently bought at Pottery Barn Outlet. They were originally ~$200 each but I picked them up for $30 each. I assume the hearty discount was due to the rows and rows that were still for sale. They are definitely outside the normal Pottery Barn “look” (which would probably explain why I like them so much).

I’ve also been on the hunt for a set of affordable bamboo regency chairs for our kitchen table. I wound up buying a set of metal bamboo patio chairs on eBay. I think I paid around $100 for four, plus shipping via Greyhound.

They were a bit chippy, so I’m having them sandblasted and power coated in glossy white. All told, they still cost less than $100 per chair — and they have this look while also being a little different.

So if all else fails, don’t forget to check eBay.

Best of luck in your search!

In your “massive” chair search, did you come across any counter hieght chairs of reasonable price that would go with a large old wooden art table? We will be restoring it to use as our dining table. We have a style that’s a blend of modern and traditional, so several chairs could work, but we are both artists so I tend throw out a lot of options just because they’re not unusual enough. So I thought maybe you had run across something interesting in your research.:)

I just bought the docksta table as well and found it to be real wobbly-any thoughts on how to fix this? How is yours holding up?

design*sponge

oh man, ours is, too. i didn’t feel wobbly when we tested it at ikea but it certainly is now. i stick little slivers of cardboard under the top where it connects to the base but it didn’t help much. damn you, ikea!

Did yuo ever have any luck finding a lower price alternative for the faux bamboo (adler type) chairs? I need chairs and counter stools.

Thanks!

I bought two Williams Sonoma Home oxblood chairs to go with two I already have (to go around a round glass table), and they both arrived broken (white glove service, my ***). The company said there were no more available, and that’s that. I can’t recommend WSH. I’m afraid. Now I have two chairs at a table that’s too big for them, and I can either buy some black ones and paint them, or just try to get something that blends in. Suggestions?

Tina

I own 4 chairs like the olive green pictured on the left in the top photo. I purchased them about 10 – 12 years ago from a consignment shop (St. Louis) for $50 each. Even then, the price seemed a bargain. But I’d like two more, or two matching arm chairs. There are two selling on e-bay right now for $229 (the pair), but I’m afraid to have them shipped to me. I like to see what I’m buying.

Alison

I am also looking for these chairs and I paid too much money for a designer who showed me a picture of these chairs in black (which is what I wanted). A little of my own searching and I found it on Dana Grad’s website for $250.00 each…

Jeanne

I’m selling four of these on ebay right now if anyone is interested. They are black. Email me via ebay to discuss

Cyndie

did anyone ever find any painted black bamboo counter stools? I love the ones from williams-sonoma but probably can’t afford them!

madeleine

I love your chairs. Im looking for white bamboo chairs for a dining room table. I saw something on a Candace Olson link recently but cant find them for a reasonable price – I saw the Jonathan Adler chairs and they are too pricey. Any suggestions? Im willing to paint.

Jennifer Johnson

I am selling four of these without arms for $1,000.00 or $250.00 each. They are currently white and need to be re-painted.

melinda timlen

Hi Jennifer,
Can you post a photo of the chairs that you are selling? Where are you located?
Thanks.

Cynthia

I’m so glad I found this thread. If anyone has any up to date leads on where to get affordable versions of these chairs I would love to know! Especially if there are any shops/sellers in the DC metro area.

Anne

Ditto Cynthia’s comment – I am looking for these beauties in Dallas! Vintage or new . Thanks
