i stopped by julia rothman‘s house the other day and was blown away by her beautiful collection of hand and glove molds. she mentioned that a few of them came from fishs eddy so i was psyched to stop by the shop in brooklyn heights manhattan last week and see so many of them on display. you can pick up some plain porcelain versions right here or stop by the brick and mortar shops if you’re in nyc. the saleswoman said they get a rotating stock in regularly so be sure to check often if you’re looking for something new. prices for the plain porcelain versions range from $99-$150 right here. I have one of these glove molds I bought at an antique store here in Cincinnati. Its a shiny blue metal, not porcelain, and the hand is very flat. Its very different. We used it in our last apartment as a towel holder in our bathroom. We mounted it into the wall so that the hand was sticking straight out – it actually has holes for screws at the bottom. I will have to take a pic.

I bought a whole set of original diner-ware last time I was in manhattan – I love the fact that they “rescue” iconic, historical, utilitarian items that might end up in a storage warehouse – or worse !
hmm…maybe it did. i guess it was the broadway shop then because we dropped off our tv at housingworks on montague at least 3-4 weeks ago. thanks, i’ll ammend that.

you can also often find “hands” on ebay for about $15/hand. I have several purchased that way…

There is a shop near me in Atlanta that has a large inventory of porcelain glove molds for $30. The owner is really cool and will ship anything (she sells great mid-century stuff).

Along the same vein, you can pick up tiny porcelain and wood arms of similar proportion that were once attached to dolls, at John Derian’s store on the Lower East Side. I think they’re about $8-$15.
The hands are wonderful, but I love that wallpaper behind them! Is it vintage? I feel like I have seen the pattern before anyone know anything about it? Thanks.

I have a great old glove mold and an old artists’ model hand I found on eBay a couple of years ago and we have both on top of the bookshelf in our toddler’s room. They hold our collection of finger puppets (the little knit ones of animals you can buy on the street in NYC as well as some awesome felt ones from Takashimaya). Just another idea.

was in the pros=cess of moving when i lost a pair of glove molds, they belonged to my ex, would like to replace them, they were similar to your pix, only in white. am also int in posters mid-cent back to ww1.
